Is there any way to stop spam in Yahoo mail. other than their own spam guard???
I get about 80 spams a day from, viagra to cialis to credit checks, etc etc.. I have never subscribed to any of them nor have I ever purchased any of these products... I know I could change e-mails, but every so often, one of my legitimate e-mails goes into my spam folder, & the odd one is very important.. |

Since you are using your Internet browser to do HTTP email, you are at the mercy of the Yahoo spam filters and Junk folder options. You are getting the level of protection you are paying for: nothing.
If you want to pay Yahoo $19.99 a year for their Yahoo Mail Plus service, you can use your desktop email client to send and receive email, via the POP3 and SMTP mail protocols. Microsoft's free to download "Windows Live Mail" (WLM) desktop mail client has a built-in junkmail learning filter, which you can train.
I use a combination of Windows Live Mail and MailWasher Pro (MWP). MWP has a learning filter, plus uses custom spam filters I write and publish, and consults a list of known-spam databases. Very little gets through MWP. Those that do are sent to the Junk folder in WLM.
I hope this wasn't too cornfusing, as Chip would say! _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

Yahoo! Plus allows you to use both a browser and a desktop email client for email. You are allowed to create 200 filters in Yahoo! Plus, vs 100 in the the free Yahoo! mail.
You will add complexity by moving up to your emailing routine, in order to use it with a desktop client. First of all, you'll need to install the desktop email client application. Then, you'll need to learn to configure the mail servers to point to the Yahoo servers. Then, you train the junk filters.

Thanks Wizardo,
It's refreshing to see that my scattered thoughts are getting through, now and then.
I was about to recommned to Jolynyk, just junk Yahoo, and go with FREE Mozilla FF THUNDERBIRD and buy the Mailwasher Pro software to round out the email problem.
"Joly" - just go to MW (1st) before opening your email. Look carefully at all listings and decide [not too hard to figure] who are your friends and which ones you think you need to open. Delete and Bounce the others. Real simple, quick, and slick. Mailwasher allows you to read most all email before it gets to your HDD. So when you delete/bounce a 'nuisance' it's gone forever. But on some email readings through MW, you won't get any text, but just some hyperlinks. I always 86 them, too.
Filters - well for me? They are still cornfusing. They require advanced PC studies possibly; at least an Associate Professor's Degree in Cornfusiology. _________________ Chip

I and the rest of the MailWasher Community do not recommend using the Bounce feature, except for rare occasions when you are not able to unsubscribe from a legitimate newsletter. If some fanatic keeps sending your junk mail and ignores your request to stop, put him on the Blacklist, but don't bounce.
Bounces should be reserved for mail servers unable to deliver to a non-existent account. They are a left-over feature of the 1990's.
Nowadays, all spam email has forged senders and forged Reply To addresses. If you use the bounce feature on spam, innocent people will get the bounces. You see, the forged accounts are often stolen from regular Joes. In other cases, spam templates create totally bogus From and Reply To accounts. Bouncing to these accounts results in senseless backscatter, as mail servers toss around complaints that can't be delivered.
Undeliverable bounces get bounced back to YOU, if you initiated it in MailWasher.
No more bouncing, okay? _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

Do you want to see what a spam filter for MailWasher looks like? Here ya go:
Code: |
[enabled],"Viagra Spam [From]","Viagra Spam",16711680,OR,Delete,TakesPrecedence,Automatic,From,contains,Pfizer,From,contains,viagra.com,From,contains,"Free To Try",From,contains,"® Official Site",From,containsRE,"VI[A@]G®A|V[I1]AGR[A@]|Viag.?ra|viagar|ivagra|v[ia]{2}gra|v[iy]arga|V_I_A_G_R_A|Cia1is|^i?Ci?a.?li?s\b|Impotence|sexual\ health",From,containsRE,Erectile|Erection|\bP[i1l]lls\b|(Potency|Sex)\s?Tablets|(Anti.?)?(?-i)ED\b|[Aa]nti-ed,From,contains,"sex remedies"
|
That is a real MailWasher v6 Viagra filter, from my own personal custom filters, identifying Viagra by the From name or sender account. That is the kind of work I do, to help the anti-spam community, and myself. I currently publish 5 different Viagra spam filters, for both the old and new versions of MailWasher Pro. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

Jolynyk;
Yes, you can use MailWasher Pro with Yahoo Plus (not free Yahoo!). The standard free Yahoo service boots you off if you try to use a POP3 email client (desktop program). The Plus version has a configuration link to setup your POP and SMTP settings in Outlook, Outlook Express (gone with XP), Windows Mail (Vista only), Windows Live Mail (I use it), Thunderbird, etc. You'll need to have one of those setup as your default email client.
I am an affiliate for MailWasher Pro. You should go to my MailWasher Pro web page and read about it first. There are links, banners and buttons to download it and try it for free, for a month. Other links lead you to the shopping cart, where you can license it for $29.95 for the first year, then renew the license for $9.95 per additional year. The license it good for one PC, but there is a price break for three licenses. I recommend trying it first, to see if you can Grok the settings.
MailWasher Pro works with all POP3 email systems, like Yahoo Plus, and any dial-up and broadband ISP email servers you are authorized to access. Note, that it only receives email and displays it in plain text. It is meant to filter out spam or unwanted , or easily read news briefs, then delete them. The code I posted earlier recognizes Viagra in the From address and automatically deletes any messages matching the listed conditions. I never see the deleted messages. They become spam statistics which I write about on my blog, every Sunday.
Because MailWasher only receives POP3 email, you need a desktop email client to send or reply to email. MailWasher sits between your email servers and your desktop email client. It is a mail screener.

MailWasher has a setup wizard to help you setup your email accounts. If you switch to Yahoo Plus and go get their POP3 and SMTP settings, then input them into MailWasher Pro, it will become your spam filter. Then you can download and install my custom MailWasher Pro Filters (read the instructions first!). You will need to setup a desktop email client to download desirable messages and reply to them.
There is going to be a learning curve. Have you ever used a desktop email client to send and receive your email? Have you ever configured the mail server settings?
If this is making your head spin, stay with what you are used to using and hit the delete key as often as necessary. Fine tune your Yahoo Spam settings. Setup your 100 allowed filters to send anything with any variation of Viagra in the FROM, SUBJECT, or BODY to the junk folder and set that to delete instantly, or after a week or two.
If I get the inclination I may write a guide for converting from browser based email to desktop email clients and spam filters. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

Sorry Wiz...
I meant to say 'blacklist' instead of BOUNCE in my reply above.
I remember very well you going over the problem with using BOUNCE, in the past, on other threads.
I must have been cornfused again when I was typing my reply. _________________ Chip
