Are there any more at home like us? What is there about the steel guitar that draws us all together? Without a doubt, the steel guitar family is MY family. Why do I care who played steel guitar on Ray Price recordings in the '50's? Why am I attending ISGC this year....just to hear Dicky Overbey play steel from 1 to 3am behind Darryl, Amber, and Leona? This wonderful instrument puts on display the heart of the one sitting behind it. I can honestly say that I love Buddy (both of them), Lloyd, John and his wonderful wife Jean, Wimpy (I would love to be his next door neighbor), the Bobbster (I knew immediately that I had known him all of my life....I just had not met him until then). As Albert Svenddal said to me......'There is something about the steel that tugs at the heartstrings'. Jody S. knighted me as an honorary Texan...(I could not be more proud). Buck, Russ, and Debbie reduce me to a puddle at the TSGA Jamboree at the Sunday Morning Service. Ed Brown trusted me to send him the money for the products that I purchased from him. Rick Alexander became a life long friend immediately..............how I wish that life would have been so very much longer.
Bobby Caldwell thru his playing and his posts to the Forum put his heart on display for all to see....and although I had only a few conversations with him I will miss him forever.
Ray Montee became a life long friend immediately.....anyone that helps me spend my money can't be all bad.
We are still disecting things that Buddy, Lloyd, and a host of others played 40-50 years ago. I will barely 'foul any of them off' but I do recognize the genius of what they do and did.
What a lucky bunch we are.....and the best part is....if they need us, we are there. Long live the steel guitar community.........as Red Foley sang many years ago, 'We are most richly blessed'.

I've never been to the St. Louis steel show, but I'm tempted to go to hear Dicky Overbey. I wish I'd known about this sooner. To hear him playing with a collection of good singers is just the setting I like to hear good steel players work. I love the intos, breaks, and especially the backup licks. You don't get to hear that demonstrated in a set of instrumentals. Dicky is one of the best at that kind of playing, if not the best, that I've ever heard. I've been addicted to his playing since the Ronnie Milsap days. I'm probably going to be too busy to make it, but I sure hope someone post some youtube videos of this. The Steel Guitar Hall of Fame will be accepting a well deserved player with Dicky's induction. He's been in my personal Hall Of Fame for a long time, and you that know me know I'm very selective in what I'll spend my time listening to. Not taking anything away from any of the other great players, just confirming how Dicky deserves to be recognized with the best of the best.
If you don't believe me, go to the ET Midnight Jamboree when Dicky is there with Amber and count the steel players in attendance. However, Amber and Randy are enough to bring true country lovers out with their own talents, so it's a double whammy for me.

RICK.........it's only been about 38 years now, up and running and all. Couldn't you squeeze it in?
Ben, I'm happy to be a part of your world. Thanks for remembering me. |

Ben,
It's true, we ARE blessed. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that "an instrument of ten strings" is mentioned several times in the Bible. Perhaps that's why a special kind of person is often called to play it. |
