Ted Solesky sent me this and asked me to post it. He also sent me a recent one of Ralph, Gene Fields and himself.

Great picture. That's gotta be early 60's. I see the front of a 61 Dodge behind him.

Neat pic! Live music was so hot back then. It was a really big deal to be in a band... any band! Seeing a band with a steel guitar in it was so cool.

My parents had a 61 Dodge just like the one in the pic, it was spring green with pushbuttons on the dash to select the transmissin gears. As a kid this seemed like a huge innovation. Didn't take much to impress us back then.

Those Fender steels looked real sharp on stage. Moon was way ahead of his time with what he was playing, truly innovative ...

The second I saw the cool pic I thot of home in the 50s. If that shot was taken anywhere near Bell Gardens, then home it is.
That whole S/E LA region was hoppin and boppin back then.

Just a guess, but since we've determined it's the early 60's, I'm thinking it could be somewhere in Las Vegas that the photo was taken. Moon basically was living in Vegas in those years, and came to LA to do sessions for Buck, Wynn, et al., or to meet with Leo F. for one reason or another.

Herb, I believe your right. I met Don Rich and Buck in the 60's when I did a 1 night gig with them. They talked about Moon being around Vegas a lot. Wynn Stewart was using him. I hope Moon don't shoot me for showin that picture. It interest me when I first saw it. Don told me some neat stories about Moon. Apparently they picked on him in fun.

Thanks to John Billings' research on the Hub Cafe, I now believe that the shot was taken in Fullerton CA when Moon was visiting the Fender plant for some reason.

My pleasure Herb! Does anyone know the old Fender address? Does it jibe with the 2416 address on the building in back? As in, maybe, across the street? More net search required I guess!

...back when men were men and hoisted their double neck under their arm...what do you old weak sissies think of that?
...and you youngsters making money with your little toy 'easy to fly with' steels...

and we're still amazed with ralph's taste, style and relevance today...50 years later!

Herb,
I'm starting to have some doubts about the Hub Cafe I found. The addresses don't seem to make sense. I've contacted an expert, maybe he'll chime in!

You just 'gotta' write a book. You are a wealth of information concerning the history of steel guitars and steel players. I know, I know, I keep bugging you about this. Sorry! (No I'm not!)

I sleuthed on license plate color schemes of the early 60s and California went from Black on Yellow to Yellow on Black in 1963. It looks like possibly both of these plate color types in the photo. Of course then they could just be Californians in Vegas. Also Nevada had White on Blue from '61-'64 and this may be the color of some of the plates in the photo. In other words, this is why I am not a detective.

I tried the Hub Cafe angle in Fullerton. But could not confirm -- something did not quite click. Like the 2614 Street address which I could not find on side streets and cross streets from that particular location. I looked at the angle of the shadows, could be looking north if noonish or east if late afternoon or so. So "Drove around" the block using Google Street view from possible vantage points but did not quite match (Street numbers very low numbers). Also tried the Fender site 500 S. Raymond Avenue area but not successful. But then I am not familiar with those areas. Maybe someone else would have better luck.

I'm sorry about not knowing more about time or location. Just thought you'd find the picture interesting. In an interview, Joe Belinski (local DJ) said his hair was turning gray, and Ralph said 'his' hair was turning loose!lol

Also, what year did Fender start painting the frames black? And when did Mooney switch to Fender? I thought he was still playing the Frankensteel with Buck in '59.

BTW-I love this old photo. I don't think I was born yet when it was taken!
