I have only been a SGF member a few months even though I been a Pedal Steel player for over 30 years and met a lot of the great players like Speedy West ,Wild Bill West9Dotties& Ex Shellys dad), Pete Drake,Don Helms Little Roy Wiggins one of the Monsters that truly never got the recognition He deserved was Julian Tharpe this man was a Steel Guitar Master I heard him play licks and knew how hard those licks would be to play,he done it effortlessly...In another post I told about meeting him He went on stage not long afterwards at Scottys Convention with that Black and Gold Sierra, loaded with pedals and levers and I think maybe a 14 string,He played and done this outrageous lick then winked and smiled at Me,After he was finished He came up to me and made this %$#@!^ Comment about someone there:) i don't think he cared for to much:). After that every time I saw him He would alaways come to me and talk to me,I was happy I got to meet him,I know others had to be inspired by him.
Here a video of him

I saw Julian Tharpe play at the Demons Den in the summer of 1974 and I was so inspired by his playing that I bought my first steel, a Sho Bud Professional, in December of that year. He was an amazing musician. |

Julian was a Hero of mine, as a young kid starting out playing here in Dallas, I would go to clubs he was playing at and just sit and soak up all I could, Julian was one of a kind, My Dad built his First 14 string, RIP Ol Friend.. to bad they didn't turn him loose on the recording ... |
