I like the idea of just having a single neck steel .Ive got an old sho-bud pro 1. Im in the market for a new single neck steel. Ive noticed that carter, and GFI have them available. I cant find many other brands that make just a single neck steel..Any ideas? Or am I not looking in the right places?

I've been using an Excel S-10 in a theatre setting and it has been great. Light as a feather, and very compact because it is keyless. And I have an S-10 p/p that is reasonably light and sounds great. There are lots of quality options out there.

I've got an Excel too...it's a D-10 with keys, and it's still very light, sounds great and looks great. Same would with the S-10, keyed or keyless. I recommend it.

If you just want a single neck guitar, why do you want to get rid of your Sho-Bud?
Or are you just wanting a backup guitar?

If you're in the market for a single neck guitar, here's a few guitars made by the same family that made your pro 1:

http://jacksonsteelguitar.com/guitars-blackjack.cfm

http://jacksonsteelguitar.com/guitars-blackjack-custom.cfm

http://jacksonsteelguitar.com/guitars-edge-ul.cfm

I have a Blackjack Custom and I really like it.

Good luck with your search.

Go to the top of this page and click on "Links."
Then click on "Manufacturers." On the left hand side of the page that comes up is a list of many individuals who build steel guitars. Click on each web site listed to see the products offered by that builder.

Several of these companies make single neck guitars
and some will custom build almost anything you can dream up...

Have fun!

We just bought a GFI Expo S-10 for my wife, who is learning. It has 3 pedals and 4 knee levers standard and as a coincidence the 4 knees are identical to 4 of the 5 I have on my Franklin with the exception I had one additonal pull on my RKR (raise 7th half tone).

If I ever needed a backup Steel it's a no brainer - it is pro quality.

Thanks for the info everyone!. I meant to say a single body guitar i guess. Not the sd-10. I love my sho-bud! I dont have enough experience for comparison. Im looking for something lightwieght, that stays in tune, and plays well. I know sometimes new gear tends to function better than the old vintage stuff...amps,6 strings, ect... I may be wrong in this case.

Alex, you can find a S-10 BMI from time to time on the "for sale" section of this Forum. There might even be a couple on there right now. They're workhorses and even the old ones are built solid and stay in tune great. I have a '78 or '79 vintage BMI S-12 which I'd put up against anything out there for tone, playability, and looks. They can be had either "keyed" or "keyless".........JH in Va.

The GFI Expo S-10 that we bought is very light, even in the case. It seems to stay in tune pretty good. I put GHS Stainless Steel Pedal Steel strings on it.

Then keep it...seriously!
If it holds tune, has awsome tone, plays well, then just keep it.

If it needs some work, there are people on this forum who could make it work great.

I don't know if you're planning to get rid of the Sho-Bud, but if you are, you might regret it.

If you have some steel guitar jams or shows in your area, that would be the place to check out other steel guitars.

As far as new guitars are concerned, there are many great guitars to choose from.

The Jackson is built by the same family that built your Sho-Bud.
It sounds fantastic, the action is outstanding, and it's light weight too.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Rick

I have owned and played six Williams single neck guitars both keyed and keyless. The smallest one that I owned and played was a single 12 7 X 5 keyless. The case was so small that several times it was mistaken for a sax case. I could actually fit it in the overhead bin of an airplane. It was small, very light weight but had great full body tone. Gerry Walker owns that guitar now, I wish I had it back.

Blessings, Albert

Some builders only offer a single 10 string neck on a double frame [SD10] as a standard Pro model. 2 that I know of off hand are Emmons and Derby. I think possibly Mullen and ZumSteel. Maybe Rains as well. Some of these may build a U12 on a single body, so would maybe build you one in a 10 version. They may offer a student guitar in a single neck 10 too.

As mentioned, Lamar Colvin builds an excellent Pro single neck guitar as does Williams, Excel, Carter, Sierra, Desert Rose, GFI and BMI. Franklin used to as well.

There are others too if you look around.

So many single 10 players prefer the size and comfort of a double sized guitar, that some builders elect to use the same frame for both. Maybe it's more economical for them that way.

If you want a particular brand, you can always check to see if they will do a custom build of a single 10 on a single body.

Emmons (not any all-pull S-10's anyway), Zum (not counting the Stage One), Rains (not counting the Carpsteel), Mullen, Derby, and some others.

Emmons sells S-10 PP
Mullen Sells SD-10
Derby Sells SD-10

The point is...
It is easy to find a single neck PSG new or used.
I might sell or swap one for the show-bud myself.

I own a S-10 Zumsteel. It's about a 1989 model. I ask Bruce about it a few years ago and he said there was a minimum order he had to place for S-10 end plates and he did't sell enough S-10's to be worth ordering that many, so he was going to build only SD-10's.

My Fessy is a S-10. Back shelf is about 2.5-3 inches wide, about the same as a Sho Bud Pro-I, I believe.
