I too would like to add my thanks to Fred and all the folks who worked hard to put together this fine show. There were so many excellent players there, it was a real honor to be a part of it.
One special highlight for me was watching and hearing Gene Fields play. One neck is tuned to an open G major and has a raised, actual fretboard, so that the strings are only a little bit above the frets. He plays without a bar, picking with his right hand and pressing down on the strings with his fingers against the frets with his left hand, much like Thumbs Carllile used to do. It was a real treat to see and hear this. Gene is really one of the great innovators of the steel world, both in building and in playing the instrument.
Once again, my thanks for allowing me to be a small part of this fun, fine show.

Did you all know Mike Sigler can sing? He did a vocal number during his set and came back up for another on Greg Jones' set. All done with the same top-shelf quality as his steel playing, but I'm embarrassed to say I can't recall which songs he sang. They were familiar country standards, but I'm drawing a blank.
Thanks Herby, Jim and Mike for some great new CD's. Boy! These are all great. I have to compliment Mike on the song selection and title--Cold Hard Steel-- being right up my alley. I bought "Touring With Herby" in St. Louis as a gift for my father-in-law; liked it so well that I picked up one for myself in Lexington.
I don't think I've ever been to a show where Rob Parker didn't sing and Herby didn't pick.
Great work by all the players including my friend Joe Wright and local favorite Chuck Rich.

Hey if you weren't there you missed another great show!! Along with Herbie & Mike Sigler doing an outstanding job I thought Jim Cohen Played very very well. (Nice job Jim) Of course John Hughey was outstanding as always and Greg Jones played a ZB thru a Fender bassman & it sounded great. I thought Kenny Hollicross & band did a nice job Fri Nite & then Chuck Rich & band were great Saturday. Joe Wright was phenominal on both sets.
All in all it was as good a show (other than ST.Louie) as I have been to. On Time, Good Sound, & we got to hear some great steelin & singin. No better weekend can be found.
Thanks Fred
PS. Mike Siglers selections were
: Walk alone (Marty Robbins)
:Together Again (Buck)

Hey Fred, well you did it again! What a fantastic show! You always have a super lineup of players and I get to meet many nice people at your shows, and hey, that's what it's all really about, meeting quality people with the same interests! I'm looking forward to next year. If anyone out there in cyber-land has any photos of myself playing sax with John Hughey please send them to me and I'll cut your lawn for the next 5 years! Thanks to the House band for hangin' in there with all the steelers. Fred you know that I'm originally from Lexington and like last year I always meet someone that I knew from back in the 70s before I left to play in Europe, what a blast I had! I'll be there next year you can count on that. Excellent organization Fred!

Enjoyed the show. Great lineup.
I would like to see Sonny Curtis
next year. He was there as a back up
this year but never got to play.
Also, I would like to have seen Smiley
Roberts play, he is keeping the Pete
Drake style alive.
I think Russ Hicks and Randy Beavers
would be a good addition too.
Its like this, if you book Russ, you
get Laney on vocals.
Fred, I bet Lloyd would come too.
I doesn't hurt to ask.

Thanks fellas, for your comments. It's always a pleasure to get great players together and just stand back and hear them do their thing. The 2004 show will be the first Friday evening and all day Saturday in November. |
