I did a home recording session for a jam band today, the guitars were out of tune with the track and each other, the vocals were out as well, there was delay on the steel as it went into the recording software.
They were happy, it paid $50, I guess all is good. One just never knows what you might be asked to do. Makes you appreciate the accuracy of the CD's we all listen to.

this reminds me of a gig I played recently. The guitar and bass were in two different keys for about 1/3 the tunes and the non stop-single note guitar player was in a key (and world) all of his own . I took my cloth and cleaned my steel alot. |

I just closed my eyes and shot for the middle or at least what I thought was the middle.
I once did a jazz session where the producer wanted big complex 5-8 note chords. I told him I had three picks that was the best I could do. The piano player played the augmolished b5 sharp9 and demented minors over a 4 chords to see how close I could get. He called them adult chords. I felt like a little kid not an adult at all. I took the money and ran. They had it to burn.
Dave congrates on the induction.

Thanks for the congrats Larry... and laughing my butt off over the "demented" minors.....
so in truth we all know that truly "demented" pianee players all turn out to be Floyd Cramer wannabes.... if only they could get the PSG sound... ha ha ha ha _________________ Dave Wren

You did the only thing you could do, Larry, in trying to find a pitch center. Any experienced producer knows that unfretted instruments should go down last so you can find the center, but I can't tell you how many home projects I have been to and they only have a guy singing and playing an out of tune guitar. Great advice for the future, as always.
In my short steel career I have had one recording session so far, and pitch of other instruments wasn't an issue (my own intonation was, but I kept at it and I think they ended up with some usable stuff), but length of songs and types of groove were more of a challenge.
Good experience, though! |

Hi Larry,
I got to do a session a few weeks ago with a guy who insisted on putting chorus through my headset while I was recording the steel track. His composition also had at least a bajillion chord changes. It was tough to follow.
About half of my chops were outa tune.
I talked the guy into letting me have a do over. This time without the chorus while recording.
Lastly, I want to say that I always think about what you've taught me when I sit down at the steel guitar.
I'll bet your track turned out better than you think because I know you're a great steel guitarist and a heck of a teacher too.

I did a one song session for a funeral parlor. It was titled "I've got the Formaldehyde Blues". They asked if I could play any embalmed chords. I threw in a demolished 5th instead. |

Wow, if it is all true as per what you stated Larry, I sure as hell hope that your name does not appear on the CD's credits unless that sound mixer is a genius. With almost the entire band playing out of tune, that must be some earful of a CD. This cat would sure not have sat there and continued on if my name was to appear. It could come back to haunt you. |

This project will never be heard on country radio so I think I am safe. These were nice guys just young and eager to play. A young steel friend of mine lives 2 blocks away from the guitar player in a small Washington town, I shared his number with them, he will get them on the right track.

I played a session similar to what you are talking about back in the early 90's. I was the only one in tun that CARRIED the band. So yes I have been there.

Sounds like trying to play along with Lester "Roadhog" Moran and the Cadillac Cowboys record. _________________ Emmons S10, p/p, Nashville 112, Zion 50 tele style guitar, Gibson LP Classic w/Vox AC30, Fender Deluxe De Ville and a Rawdon-Hall classical |
