Seems like my 10th string raise goes flat after about 10 or 15 minutes of playing, maybe sooner, I haven't really timed it.
Is this normal, and if not, what could be causing it, and what can I do to fix it?

Considering the mechanism is set up properly....I would say it's the String itself?? Is this happening with a new string; or has it been on for a while then happens?? What string are you using for what kind of steel is it??

Check your nylon tuner at the changer. It may be worn out and slipping on the rod, or loosening up with pedal action.

It should be snug and have good tension when you turn it with your tuning wrench. If you can turn it with your fingers, it's probably too loose.

If that's the case, you can sometimes swap ends with it, or slightly smash it a little with pliers to tighten it up as a temporary fix.

It could also be a machine head thats slipping and not holding pitch, or possibly the roller at the nut is stuck and keeping a little extra tension?

Good idea to inspect the undercarriage every time you take it out of the case. Make sure all the stop screws are tight, etc. Has it been a long time since you changed strings, cleaned or oiled? Post more details if possible.

I've only been playing PSG about 8 months, so I don't really know what the hell I'm looking at when I look at the underside. I'm trying to learn, that's why I keep asking all these goobery questions. This is the only one I've ever played, so I don't even know what's normal or not.
It's a Desert Rose I bought off this forum's for sale section. Seems like a nice enough guitar, but it probably needs some tweaking that I don't recognize or really know how to do.
The roller at the nut turns fine, and the string itself is not going flat, just the pedal pitch.
I just checked Jerry's recommendation, and it is really loose, easily turned with fingers, as is the 6th string. I'll try turning it around or mash it a little...

Alright, I learned something today, thank you, Jerry Overstreet! Cool
I had been thinking those things HAVE to be turning, how else could it be going flat?Muttering But I never got around to looking at it, and just threw that question out this morning before heading out for work.
Anyway, I turned all the pedal raise hex nuts around and they are much snugger now, so I'm confident that is going to be fix.
I only want to put a compensator or two on this thing and I believe it will be pretty serviceable for a while. My 6th string detunes quite a bit when I use the E raise or the C pedal and I would like to get that fixed and I believe I'll be pretty happy with it for a while until I decide to try a double neck or a 12 string.

You're quite welcome Tim. I hope this takes care of your problem. You might consider replacing the loose ones with some new ones. They are reasonably inexpensive, but they come in a few different sizes....lengths and rod size. I don't know which size the DR takes, but someone here can tell you.

They are available from the George L's online store as well as from some of the vendors that sell steel guitar products.

Best of Luck with your steel guitar experience.

Yep, I think I need to go ahead and order up a whole new set of these hex nuts, pretty sure the rods are 7/64ths. Also get another rod or two for the compensators I want to put on.
I would ask Chuck Back, but he's out on tour with somebody right now... does anybody have any suggestions where I might order up this stuff?

ps: the pulls are staying in tune, now. Smile

Tim... a simple fix for loose nylon tuners. Screw off the tuner, place one wrap of plumbers teflon tape on the threads. (Do not put more wraps or you won't be able to reinstall the tuner) Screw the tuner back on, problem fixed.

If you need new tuners, George L has them. Hope this helps

It may also benefit from a good lubing. Here's a link to some great info on how to lube your guitar. Click Here

Thanks for all the help everybody, the pulls are staying in tune now. And Clete, I got in touch with Jerry Roller and he is making me up some rods, so thanks for that, too.
