Just wondering What humbucker pickup will fit in my Mullen Steel?? Royal Precision Its brand new and the pickup is way too noisy for me. I love the Lawrence 710 but don't know if it will fit. Would appreciate any help on this topic.

Dale,
I have a Fulawka Humbucker here. It measures 4 5/8" by 1 9/16" 19K Nice and quiet.

Say, HOW noisy is your single coil? Try and describe it with normal settings on your amp and the VP down
all the way

Its a loud hum..I also find it a thin pickup, I am not used to a single coil pickup. Also having a problem getting the right tone with the Fender Steel king.

Dale,

I believe a BL-710 will fit in a Mullen RP as long as it's the 'Narrow Mount' style you go for.

I have some narrow mount BL-XR16s in my RP. They look pretty much identical to the 710s.

Another popular option for the Mullen Guitar is :

George L : 10-1

From the website:
19.5 Ohms, 12-1 19.5 Ohms The sound of Jimmy Day never rang truer than in this pickup. It works great on any steel! Warm highs and full bottom! *Add $15.00 USD for the 12 Stg. Model.

For nice single coil sound with less noise, consider the Alumitone provided mounting in a Mullen RP is not a big hassle. I think they sound better than any of the George L's pickups. No experience with the BL710, but it it's anything like the old 705's, it would sound good.

FWIW, my favorite sound in a Mullen, is the stock single coil that they install.

Dittos to what Jerry said. I've gone through lots of aftermarket pickups on my pre-RP Mullen and the stock single-coil pickup that Dixie Mullen built for the guitar sounds best. The Alumitone is a very, very close second place.

Just about any replacement pickup will fit a Mullen guitar. I am surprised that you are having that much problem with the stock single coil that they wind. They are usually good pickups

I still have the single coil in my RP and find that the upper register strings have a tinny-ness to them (if that's a word) and sometimes seem harsh. For instance, my band does a lot of Josh Turner material and it seems his steel player has a mellower sound. I've used Forum advice on my Nashville 112 amp settings and played around with that but still not completely happy. I use George L Nashville Chromatic strings and am happy with those. When is it the strings and when is it the pickup?

I have a Mullen RP, a couple of years old. The stock single coil had too much hum. I ordered and installed a Bill Lawrence 710, narrow mount, and I couldn't be happier. It is super quite, clean, and has a great sound. If this one ever was to go out on me, I'd get another just like it, if still available.

Replaced mine for similar reasons in a Pre-RP SD10 Mullen with an E-66 and it sounds just great. Had to cut the tabs off the sides to fit the cavity.
