Here's the set up,
everything that has a power cord is plugged in to the same power strip which is plugged into an AC outlet. Everything is grounded.

The system is completely silent, no hums or buzzing.

I use a Hilton pedal with a hook pin up through the pedal rack.

In some rooms, there is a static crackle when my volume pedal moves, not the tread... but the pedal itself. The pin causes the crackle....I cut off a small piece of plastic straw and used it to insulate the pin and the rig is silent again.

What is the cause.. and should I care?

Sounds like ground loop hum. The pedal is grounded but is finding another ground via the pedal steel rack tot he pedal steel bodies ground.

You could use a Hum-X on the Hilton power pack or use a ground lift on it it to verify that is the problem

Thanks Ken. I may try the ground lift on the Hilton pedal to see if that is the problem and go from there.
