The annual Pioneers of Western Swing "Hall of Fame" festival takes place this weekend in Auburn, WA.

I'm very pleased to announce that this year I will be included in the new inductees to this Hall of Fame.... really an unexpected honor to join the ranks of so many really great western swing musicians.

I will also be performing with my good friends Ronnie and Shelly Elkan and thier band Bite the Bullet on Saturday. Shelly, a truly gifted singer and entertainer, is also being inducted this Sunday... so we'll be partying big time Smile

Here's a web link for more info:

Thanks so much Dave.... but I used this event to test drive my new flight case... purchased from Portland's own Paul Herschman (hope I got that spelling right.... you know the real killer lead player who aso can put you out of work on PSG Smile ).

anyway, so I flew with my steel, and now I'm back home.. had a super great time.. and then came home to find my expectant daughter having problems... and actually in the hospital... so it will be a few days before I get back to my report of the event.... but it was simply awesome.

So glad to hear you're "swamped" Dave... I still owe you big time for that tour of the city way back when...

take care my friend, dave.

OK.... so I finally am home and have time to tell a little about the great steel guitar music to heard at this year's Northest Western Swing Music Society's "Pioneers of Western Swing" festival.

I've already mention on the forum my good friends.. and super pickers Dean Rankin and Chuck Hayes... and for those that already know these two ledgends... that's enough.. but for ones who haven't had the pleasure yet:

Dean plays with the Longview, WA western swing band "Keith Holter and the The Longhorns". Simply fantastic is all I can say.. and that really is an under-statement. Virtually all music is 3 part harmony parts, with fiddle, steel and guitar. You will never have happier ears after hearing this band one time... if you are in the NW... DO go to their next gig! Forumite Pat Goodbla is their other guitar player and lead vocalist... but filled in on bass for the band I played with on Sat., as well as their drummer Dave. Best to you my friend Pat!!! ... and yes... it is true that 4 members of this band also play pedal steel guitar!!!

Chuck Hayes makes his home in Musgogee, OK now... and I'm sure he needs no introduction there. He is an absolute C6th monster... but can do whatever is needed on the E9th as sweet as the big E himself.... and if this is not enough... he sings just like Ray Price.

Both these guys are the most down to earth, friendly musicians I have ever met... and should be posters for how to be an example for the next generation of hot pickers.. both as player and great people!

But... in addition I met around 6 other NW steelers... and just had the time of my life talking PSG with all these folks.

Please forgive my senior memory if names are forgotten or somewhat incorrect.... remember I was being inducted into their "Hall of Fame"... and somewhat distracted Smile

I had the extreme priviledge of sharing the stage, during the "Hall of Fame" set on Sunday with Texas western swing ledgend, Jimmy Tomlinson. Wow... what a great steel player... sitting back by his amp was just great.. I could hear every chime, big fat C6th chord.. or rapid-fire E9th licks.... and all the while he was sitting in on a barrowed steel and amp. Jimmy's music career spans decades of playing with the western swing greats... including Hank Tompson, and even filling in for Herb Remington with the Houston's famed River Road Boys. Congrats on the POWS induction Jimmy!!!

An old friend from the Portland jam, and last year's POWS festival was Wayne Franco (Wayne was the kind fellow who lent his steel and amp to Jimmy).. and boy howdy this guy is playing some great steel guitar (of course he IS taking lessons from "Reese"... now I'm green with envy)...

Wally Giffen was there with his Black River Falls Band.. and folks... look no further for a really verstile country band!!! I love a band with the steel picker as the leader Smile

I loved listening to Hank Rodgers, from Surrey, B.C. Canada... who surprisingly is also a member of the SWSGA!!!! (Me thinks he be a snow birdie Smile ). Wonderful steel playing!

I also had the time of my life talking steel, and listening to the PSG picker for Lloyd Hooper's western swing band (boy... what a great band!!!)... but dang... I can only remember his last name, which was Berg... such a nice guy, and tone monster..... you NW steelers will know him for sure.. a great sounding GFI steel and really great sounding Webb amp.

Well, dang that still leaves about 3 other steelers... but I be dogged if I can remember their names... one had a beautiful new shinny RED Mullen... and a very sweet style to boot!

Thanks to all that received this CA prune picker with such a warm welcome... see ya'll next year!!!

Congrats again. This was only a few blocks from my home and I would have loved to have come see some of this great playing, ...but no one, including their website, could tell me if this was members only, who was playin when or anything.

Yeah.... I agree Ben, the web site could have used some current updating before the event.... I was unsure who else would be there until I walked into the front door and picked up a program Smile
