The Western Swing Hall of Fame festival is next weekend; Thursday, September 30th through Sunday, October 4th. This gathering is at the Machinist Hall in Rancho Cordova, near Sacramento, CA.
There will be numerous bands playing over 4 days, and most, if not all the bands will have a steel player. I'm pretty sure you will hear Jay Riley, "Brownie", and others. I will be playing at the event on Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday with the Star Dust Cowboys. The band leaders of the Star Dust Cowboys, Gary and Vicki Campbell, are being inducted into the Hall of Fame on Sunday, so this is a real special gig for us.
Go to the Western Swing Society, Sacramento, CA website for specifics. |

IMHO this is the Grandaddy of Musicians getting together to play for the love of it. It is not held in some Hotel Banquet Room with the audience sitting in chairs. This is a live venue in what is a throwback to the old Dance Halls with live Bands and people out there dancing to the music. Not do only fellow muscicians inspire one's playing but the Dancers just make you want to play better and take chances on what your going to play when it's your turn. This is how you learned to play with a band and other Musicians in the old Western Swing days.
Do to Health reasons I can no longer make the trip but I remember when I could in years gone by. Everyone enjoy |

David Wren talked so much about how fun this annual event is, I'm attending this year.
On top of that, Shelly & Bite the Bullet need a fill-in steeler, so I volunteered.
Our set is Saturday, Oct. 2, 5:00-5:45 pm.
The band schedule is a little tricky to find, here's the path:
http://www.westernswingsociety.org/ > Hall of Fame (link on the left) > new window opens > click "2010 Festival Info" > in new window click Band Schedule > new window and FINALLY the full list of bands and showtimes.
I hope to see a bunch of you there, and if you're looking for pedal steel instruction and professional guidance, chat me up, I teach via Skype video chat and it works great, so distance is not a problem.
Ironically, Dave Wren has to miss all the fun this year, he's in Los Angeles playing a few road gigs. That's so dang![/b] _________________ E9 INSTRUCTION

Yes, this is the first one of these Hall of Fame weekends I have missed in many years. However I am looking forward to playing some SoCal venues, so it all about balances out for me.
I'll be checking the forum for a full report on how many upset female fans were in tears at the WSS weekend without me
You guys have a ball! _________________ Dave Wren

The surprise guest was none other than Mr. Bobby Black playing his double 8 Fender console steel. From the back of the hall you would never know he was playing without pedals. The lines he plays are so elogant, and his touch is perfect. Plus he's a very friendly and down to earth sort of fellow. Very easy to talk to.
John McClung came up from LA and sat in with two different bands. John is an E9 style master. He did an outstanding instrumental version of "That's the way love goes", plus lots of real professional solos and fills on everything else. Great job John.
I had the pleasure of meeting and listening to Bobby and Mark from San Diego, Wayne from Seattle, and Sam from No Cal (I can't remember exactly where). I got to try out a Zum Hybrid and a Derby in the jam room. I must say my old push-pull sure doesn't play like those new guitars. Of course, the regulars were there, Jay Riley and "Brownie" sounding great as always.
Then there was Chuck Hayes from Oklahoma playing his keyless double 10 Stringmaster. I never saw him touch the E9 neck. It was all C6th, and man the guy is good.
Last, but not least, Jimmy Tomlinson came out from New Mexico (or was it Oklahoma) to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. He didn't ship his steel so he played a set using my steel. Fortunately my C6th neck is completely stock so he had no trouble playing a great set of country swing. My old Emmons never sounded so good.
A great time was had by all. |

Wow, sounds like another great 4 day WSS "Hall of Fame" festival!
So glad my SoCal friend John McClung (AKA Professor Twang:) ) had a chance to share his wonderfull steel skills with the other western swingers!
Pity I had to be down south for this weekend, but so glad to hear many had yet one more chance to hear the inspirational Bobbly Black!!! Of course... he will always be the BEST! _________________ Dave Wren
