I've looked around and didn't find J.D.'s Copedent around here. Does anybody know what it is and has he used it since the 1960's?

I don't have his copedent, but I do have a ticket to see him play tonight with the Desert Rose Band at The Birchmere in Alexandria, VA. Got there about an hour ago to find out that the power has been off since last night's thunderstorm. Shoot! |

3x4 Emmons setup == very simple
ABC pedals + (here's the weird part)
E to D# on LKL (!)
E to F on LKR (like Day setup levers)
2nd & 9th strings on RKL
1st & 7th strings F# to G# on RKR
that's assuming that what he published in one of his courses was correct. _________________ Larry Bell - email: larry@larrybell.org - gigs - Home Page

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but J.D. does not have that setup on his guitar. Must be a typo. I believe he plays a straight Day setup. With Day levers and Emmons pedals, you would have some very awkward pedal and knee combinations but if it makes me sound like J.D., I'll switch.---Henry _________________ Henry Matthews

That is his E9 set up, although on the P/P's he doesn't have the "0" pedal, and doesn't raise string 2 with RKR. I don't believe he uses the VKL either. He does have the Emmons pedal set up.
He used to split the string 4 and 8 raises as in this thread:
http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=117150&highlight=maness+copedent
When I saw him at the Palamino in the early '70's he used to squeeze LKR and RKL together a lot and eventually he changed to the current set up.
I've played one of his P/P's. It's really not at all as awkward as it might seem on paper. And don't bother switching. It's a lot of work and it won't make you sound any more like Jay Dee. He sounds great on anything he plays. |

Peter, not trying to rebut what you posted but I sat down at his MSA he had at Dallas a couple years ago and was a Day Setup just like I play. I could be thinking of somebody else's guitar but could have sworn it was J.D.'s. I still don't see how the reversed levers(day setup) and Emmons pedals will work together without a broken ankle but if anyone could do it, J.D could. He is one of my favorite players of all time.--Henry _________________ Henry Matthews

Yep...it's Emmons pedals and Day levers.
Hitting the Eb lever on LKL while letting off pedal 1 and holding pedal 2 down isn't too hard, but hitting the F lever on LKR while letting off pedal 2 and holding down pedal 1 is kinda awkward.
But it sure works for Jay Dee... |

Henry, my local steel pals here in LA are right, Jay Dee's levers are kind of backwards. He admits it's more awkward and harder to work, but we all get used to our setups and just learn how to make it work, and Jay Dee is no different.
Note that Lloyd Green also has both E's to F on LKR. _________________ E9 INSTRUCTION

I use to sit in on his guitar during "talent night" at the Palamino back in the late 70's and always had to think about what I was doing when I went for a KL!

I believe Tom Brumley also had his knee levers backwards to his floor pedals (i.e., Emmons on the floor and Day on the knees, or the reverse). Not really recommended, but great players can make almost anything work. |
