Hi,
My name is Ken and I come from Southern New Jersey. I don't know how I haven't stumbled onto this forum yet, but this seems the place to be!
I've had this Fender dual 8 string steel for a few years, something I found on ebay. I've tuned it to a hybrid E tuning I found on line, learned a few songs and basically I've been trying to figure it out. Then after some frustration I put it away, that was a year or so ago...
Since then she's back out, and I'm going to give this another whirl. I'm looking for a tuning and some beginner instruction to get me started on the right foot. I've been a rock guitarist for going on 25 years and I've trained in music theory. For a weekend warrior I feel I'm pretty musically inclined and I would love to be able to bring this instrument into my musical world.
One final question, I plan on restoring the instrument and I don't know where to get the tuners repaired. One neck is rendered unusable due to the tuner being stripped. I've search on line and had no luck finding parts.
Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks, great forum you all have here! |

Hi Ken and welcome to the Forum. When and if you get that other neck goin try a C6 tuning (bottom to top, A C E G A C E G) on one of the necks. There's lots of instruction available for C6, some is available right here on the Forum. Just click on "INSTRUCTION" at the top of the page. Good luck with your guitar, I hear those "traps" sound awesome. |

If it's the round gear that is stripped, it appears from the picture that unlike some, your round gear can be removed by backing out the screw that is visible in the photo. Take the stripped gear to any music shop that has been around a while, and see if they have a box of old used tuner parts. You should be able to find some matching gears, and easily replace your bad one.
Pay attention not only to the size, diameter, and number of teeth on the gear, but to the size, and shape, of the slot or mounting hole in it's center. It's a bit like finding a jigsaw puzzle piece, as the number of gear designs is endless. It make take a little time to locate a replacement, but it should be a real cheap repair that way.

Ron,
Thanks for the link, I just won the ebay auction for the tuners. Hopefully I'll be able to harvest enough gears to get my tuner back up and running.
Andy,
I'm going to get that second neck working and tune it up in that C6 you spoke of. I saw a lot of those instructional pages you talked about, looks like plenty of stuff to keep me busy.
Thanks to everyone else, I really hope I can start making this thing sing soon. Perhaps I might even move up to the pedal style...
wish me luck. |

Congratulations on pulling the old instrument out. I think you will find that all of us started, stopped, restarted again a number of times. I know I did. I have a fender dual pro just like yours. First thing I'll say, is that it is a great instrument. Second, that I like the first neck (your inoperable neck) better thna the back neck. The guy I bought it from had purchased a bunch of replacement parts which he sent me. I'll look but I may have a working tuning mechanism you can use. Not sure, cause I never looked in the bag.
You'll have your own journey on tunings. Certainly, the ACEGACEG tuning you've been recommended is one many people start on, but I found it boring after a awhile and eventually settled on a hybrid tuning after much search. I give it to you so you can take the advantage of my journey. I use A C# E G A C E D. |
