Although I'm not super keen on big road trips anymore, I'm doing one of my rare Gatlin Bros. dates this Friday (Oct. 24) at Carnegie Hall with the New York Pops. After all those years of traveling, I've never worked there and just couldn't turn it down. I'd love to come out and hear some cats play as I'm coming in the night before but some local friends already have a full schedule for us...eating mostly (nuttin' wrong with that!)

Hey Mike,
You know, I was looking through my old record albums the other day and ran across Gatlin Bros. "Straight Ahead". There you were brother, in the band shot!
"We're Number One" is a song that my wife Debbie and I have always loved. I sure didn't know that was you playing steel on there.

Thanks Mark. These gigs are lessons in patience though…hurry up and wait and then keep it as simple as possible and hope the symphony won’t drag too much (this is common but usually because they just don’t have enough monitors to hear the drummer). I’m just hoping to play in tune and loud enough to hear myself.
Speaking of straight ahead Rick. Yep, that was toward the end of my Jerry Garcia look alike days and some of the first Gatlin stuff I was honored to play on. Seems like the “We’re # 1” session was the same we did things like “Taking Somebody With Me” and “Done Enough Dyin’ Today” (although they ended up taking steel off this song cause they were afraid of it sounding too country…ironically, it was one of the things I was most proud of ever).

Just found out that Johnny Gimble will be playing fiddle on this one. It'll be a hoot!

Hey Mike:
Well I'm in N.Y. (upstate) but over two hundred miles away from "The City." I'm also gigin' that night. But it would be a hoot to see and hear you again in person.
I know what you mean about the travelling gig thing anymore. Like you though, I'd take a little trip to play a cool place like Carnegie Hall.
Have a great gig man and say hi to Mr. Gimble for me. He did a few live shows with us with Gene back when and it was a blast.

Hey Tiny & Theresa,
Just got back from the city late last night. Tiny, good to hear from you after all this time and Teresa, it went fine. This thing wasn't in the least about me but it was a real treat to work with Skitch Henderson, Johnny Gimble and of course, Larry and the Gatlin Bros. PBS taped the show for future airing (not sure when) but I'm just hoping to get some copies of the pictures for my memory book.
The food was great as always. I got in late Thursday night and had a cheese burger at Ben Ash's on 7th and 55th. With a coke and tip...$25. I found myself going to Ray's Pizza the rest of the time for a huge slice and a drink for $5.00. By the way, the burger was good.
Brad Paisley did one guest song (just with the symphony and his acoustic guitar) but did a really great job. The symphony opened up with a theme show with actor Willam Hurt narrating. I only wish I could've stayed an extra day or so and shopped.
