Got my coffee this mornin' and visited the Forum. Made my "rounds" and found a few things of interest. Satisfied that I had "done good", I backed out of it.
Sat down at my git-tar and pondered what I might play, practice or just noodle. Saw the corner of the tab for the intro and break to John Hughey's "Look At Us" - stuck in amongst a bunch of other things at the ready for practice - and decided that I might revisit it.
Cranked up the NV112 and other stuff, slid the picks on and commenced to refresh this aging memory as to what this iconic piece of music was all about. Went through it slowly (very) and took a few seconds break before attempting to attack it with vigor.
The light bulb came on simultaneously with a furrowed brow as I realized that this was OH, SO SIMPLE! There's nothing here to get excited about - just play the darned thing! Uh, huh.
It's a study in simplicity - yet it took the heart and soul of an acknowledged master of the pedal steel to breathe life into these simple musical figures - to stimulate the musical sensibilities of players and non-players alike - to project a simple passion which, in turn, captured the innate passions and imagination of oh, so many.
I learned my lesson well during those few minutes on this Saturday mornin' - with thanks to Papa John. K.I.S.S. - Keep It Simple, Stupid. Play with a ton of heart and just make bunches of pretty music.
It's gonna be a real, good day.
Respectfully,
Richard |

yup, totally agree, look also at Buddys "Blue Jade", that is beautifully simple to play but also so difficult to play, try to phrase it like he does and try to sound like he does, the beauty comes from the the heart and soul of these great players....they can make simple stuff sound so gorgeous. |

Amen to all the above. A few years ago Papa John taught me tne "Look At Us" parts. I was doing it the "hard way". In our current shows we're doing a few Time Jumpers covers with both John & Paul on steel. The true genius of both of these Masters is evident in the simple yet tasteful stylings that both exibit. I have learned more from these Gentleman that any other lessons that I may have have taken. "Sweet Memories" and " Don't You Ever Get Tired Of Hurting Me" are Masterpieces when played by John & Paul. Sinple and extremely beautiful. |
