I'm hoping that this is something that's relatively easy to fix. My high E (4th string, E9 basic Emmons setup) has the following tuning problem: When I try to flatten the string with the tuning machine, the tuning machine feels "loose" -- like it's not engaging somewhere. Eventually I am able to flatten the pitch, but it happens in a sort of haphazard way and then I have to try to bring the string up to where I want it. When I then engage my E-lower lever, and then release it -- the open high E is approximately 10-cent sharper than it was prior to my engaging the E-lower. I think this might be two separate problems -- perhaps my tuning machine is "loose" and the changes are "overtuned", but I can't really figure it out because I need to fix the tuning machine issue first.
Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance

Mike I would definitely give David a call. He is such a great help with this sort of thing and can probably talk you right through it over the phone. I had an issue recently not that far different from yours and he was so helpful. Just my thoughts |

Almost sounds like the string is hangin up somewhere when you try to lower the string with the tuning key. Have you flipped it over to check out the knee lever mechanism? Maybe a changer finger stickin? Does your guitar have rollers at the nut? |

It does have a roller. How do I lubricate it properly? |

HI Mike, I use TriFlow lubricant with the pinpoint applicator for my steel.
Greg Cutshaw's website has some excellent info on steel guitar lubrication Click Here |

Thanks so much both of you for your replies. I'm gonna see if I can work some magic with tri-flo and then probably give David a call.
Thanks again |

Just wanted to let you know, you were right on about the roller nut. It was sticking and when I took it apart, I found an area that was abraded somehow; I smoothed it out with some 0000 steel wool, lubed it with tri-flo (along with the rest of the guitar), and it's as good as new! Thanks so much for the suggestion. |

Good job Mike, sounds like maybe a good cleanin and lube next time you change strings is in order. |
