I brought a pedal steel set and tried to get as close as possible to the recommended gauges for C6 which are high to low, 014, 017 020, 024, 030, 036

Can this set be used for any other tuning(s)? Thanks for any help.

Ron

Check out these pages for lots of good info !

A lot of the 8-string tunings translate quite well to a 6 string. Also, suggested string sizes for a pedal steel may not always be the best to use on a non-pedal guitar, since you aren't going to be subjecting them to mechanical stretching.

C6, A6 and E6 are all pretty close in tension:

C6 - C E G A C E
A6 - C# E F# A C# E
E6 - C# E G# B C# E

No more than a whole step difference for any of the strings, so the same gauges will work fine for these tunings.

A good resource to have on hand is Andy Volk's book Slide Rules. It covers lots of tunings and the string gauge chart is easy to read and nice to have handy.
http://www.volkmedia.com/Volkmedia.com/Slide_Rules_Book.html

From Andys site;
Quote:
Designed to fit in your guitar case, Slide Rules includes over 70 of the most popular and useful tunings for acoustic & electric lap steel guitar, bottleneck slide guitar, resophonic guitar, Weissenborn® and Hindustani slide guitar as used by the greatest players of the past and present. The book features tunings & string gauges for Rock, Blues, Country, Hawaiian, Western Swing, Folk, Celtic, Bluegrass, Jazz, Pop, Cajun, Ambient, Classical, Raga and every genre in between.

Presented in an easy-to-read, graphic manner, the strings, notes, & musical intervals for each tuning are shown along with comments about the tuning; its uses, advantages and the players who’ve used it. A string gauge chart helps you set-up each tuning with the proper gauge strings.
