Hey Folks,

Does anyone know what sort of grease to use on a Vox volume pedal? When I got it there was this Crysco-looking lube on the teeth that turn the pot (Sorry if that's a shaky discrition. I'm no tech guy.). But, it's all dried up now and the pedal isn't moving as freely these days.

Josh

Not familiar with your pedal, but if it's a nylon rack and pinion design, probably a small amount of white lithium grease will work just fine. You should make sure that the pot itself is working smoothly and not binding as well.

Electronics dielectric grease, maybe, although I'm not sure if it's stiff enough or how long it will keep it's lubricating properties.

Thanks for the tip Jerry. How would I know if it's rack and pinion? I'm not that schooled on these things...

The round gear goes on the rotating pot shaft forming a pinion and the linear piece [rack] is mounted to the moving treadle of the pedal so that it rotates the pot when you push it.

Sorry, Josh. Maybe the pic will explain it better than I can. My reference to the design might have been unnecessary. The important thing is the gears in pedals are usually plastic or nylon and mesh together. So need some lubrication as you have discovered, to keep them moving smoothly and retard wear.

In the automotive business, we used white lithium grease on parts made of these materials, like door linkages on Heating and A/C controls, etc. It was fairly stiff, seemed to stay put well, no odor, and kept it's lubricating properties a long while. Picture file Small tube like this at your local hdwe. store for 3-4 bucks.
