A topic I have been interested in for a while

please post your string spacing, and every so often I will summarise them on one post as a ready reckoner

As I would like to keep the 12 stringers on a separate schedule, we should measure across all strings and not mix everything up by providing string to string spacing measurements

I am measuring from the centre to the centre of the outermost strings with my steel ruler

please feel free to correct me if you think i am measuring wrong or if there is a better way to make this measure

I am particularly interested in how the early (70's 12 stringers compared to the 10s) and when abouts string spacings started to narrow. For that reason, also please list the year of manufacture if your guitar. I am also interested in indentifying those modern guitars (Excel BMI Sierra?) that have even narrower than normal spacing

Are you measuring at the changer end or the nut?

Very interesting post.....I'm going to follow this one. (Always thought my Emmons D10 PP had a narrow string spacing).

I think, that for this to make sense, we should post both, nut AND bridge end spacing for this to make sense.

I've found that because there are different string gauges involved, it makes most sense to measure the overall (total) distance from the top to the bottom sting and calculate the average spacing (8 stinger divide by 7, 10 /9, 12 /11). I know of only one brand which compensates bridge end spacing for the bigger string gauge of bottom strings (Excel).

It would also be interesting to see older guitar's spacings posted.

D-10 Mullen..String Width at pickup is 3"...string width at nut is 2 and 1/2"....narrowing equals 1/2"
String separation is 11/32

Williams S10WB...String width at pickup is 2 & 29/32.
..String width at nut is 2 & 17/32....narrowing=12/32....String separation is 10/32.

Hope this helps

I'm not sure of the year of my Fessy or Mullen but my '07 Carter D-10 has the same spread as Brad's above: 3" at the bridge and 2.5" at the nut.

We ought to post the year of the model, since that's the point of comparison.

... anyone with older (60's/70's) who would care to share their statistics?

so far, with guitars we have, it appears that 3" give or take a 32nd is the standard spread for 10 strings at the changer.

and 2"1/2 (give or take a 32nd)at the nut, except for my Sho-bud which is noticeably wider across the nut
