I am trying to figure out the best way to get the tarnish off of my cross rods on my Carter and bring it back to factory shine/luster. Can anyone suggest what metal these cross rods are made of and can they be polished back to a nice finish again? Are they aluminum or some kind of alloy??

Mr. Quentin
If you go to steelguitar.com you will see some information regarding maintenance and etc....seems aimed towards Carter owners. It also references Steel Guitar of Canada. _________________ Sho Bud Super Pro, Fender Twin Reissue, Martin HD-28, Gibson J-45, Gibson RB-250,Stelling Bellflower,Regal Dobro, Takamine and Alvarez Classical, Fender Telecaster, Peavey Studio Pro 112. Wayne,
I've all over that website and havent found what material the cross shahfts are made of. I dont want to waste my time buffing if they are an alloy. Someone here must know. |

Dollars to doughnuts they're 6061 Aluminum.
Your aluminum polish of choice
I doubt they were ever shiny. Put them to a wheel and make them purty _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

I'd try some Mothers Mag & Aluminum Polish.
It can't hurt! |

They are plated, I don't think you can do much with them. |

Voldemort¹ just shot me a message informing me of my error. They're a plated/coated steel, not aluminum.

I doubt the plating is corroding. I'd say a combination of boredom, Simple Green (or your surfactant of choice) and a toothbrush. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)
