So Ive read the debates about Fender amps and have seen many recommendation for Peavey. My question is that I am new to the lap steel and I would like to play old country tunes. I need something louder than what I have and just generally love fender tube amps (although I am not dead set on getting one.) Has anyone played through a Fender Vibroluxe and if so would you recommend it? any tube-amp recommendations?

If I may add a question...I currently play through a 1970s Fender Musicmaster bass amp which a tube amp of 12w. Would a Peavey 112 be any louder?

You hit on one of my favorite amps to plug my laps into. My Custom Vibrolux Reverb. When pushed these are not real clean but that is what I like about them. Very sensitive and consistant build too. Some can be a little noisey due to circuit design but the tone is in there.

I myself no longer own any solid state amps other than an old vintage Vox. The tubes seem to warm up a lap nicely. I personally never cared for any of Peavey's tube offerings but many here play them and like 'em just fine.

See my post in your Bassman/Super thread.

Have you replaced the MM speaker? The stock ones suck big time. I have an Eminence alnico in mine and it really sounds good. If you need serious power, Super Reverbs are my fave.

IIRC, the Vibrolux has two 6L6 output tubes and two 10" speakers. If you are in that neighborhood you should check out the Ken Fox 5D6B amp. I think Ken plans another run before long.

Eric, the Peavey Nashville 112 has 80 watts going through a twelve inch speaker. It will be loud enough for any situation you may possibly encounter while playing lap steel.

The Fender Vibrolux has 40 watts of power going through two 10 inch speakers. It too will be plenty loud enough, but it is voiced for electric guitar, so the sound you'll get out of this amp will be different from the sound you'll get from the Nashville 112. Whether it's a better or worse sound is up to your ears.

I'd say either amp will be a good choice. Personally I think the tube amp will give you a bit more of the sound I like to hear. Any list of other good tube amps for lap steel must include the Fender Deluxe Reverb (22 watts, one 12 inch speaker).

It would help if you let us know what "old country" tunes, singers and steel players you like. (It's always surpising to me how many folks I meet that consider George Strait as one of the roots of country music.) For example, I love a Twin Reverb myself but it wouldn't be the best choice if I wanted to get that slightly fuzzy vintage Noel Boggs sound. A point of reference will help refine the suggestions you get. Also, is it for live performance with a band, recording, just playing around the house, etc?
