Hi guys, I recently shared a website I made that makes you a personalized tuning chart. I only received a little feedback outside of my post, some of which was mean-spirited and mocked me for bothering (which hurt a wee bit, to be honest. Maybe I shoudn't let things get to me like that ). The only thing I could figure was that I had made it too complicated. So I retooled it a little to give you the option of a simpler process. Check it out: www.pedalsteeltuning.com. If you guys have any suggestions, please let me know. I would like to thank Ross, Dick, Bob and Eric for your input and interest. |

Glad you made it back James! I find it hard to believe anyone would take the time to be mean spirited about such an effort! Hard to believe, but not surprising...kinda sad though.
At the risk of making your system even more complex...is there any potential benefit in being able to input one's own copedant?
You've done some good and very interesting work here. Thanks for sharing it with us. |

Well James, let me be one who thanks you for your work. I know what it's like to be demeaned for stepping outside the box. Some people can't stand it when another presents a new idea, or a new way to be helpful. And, yes, it is very sad. Maybe they need to do that to feel better about themselves. Who knows?
But don't let them knock you down. I, for one, intend to utilize your website and see what I can glean from it.
I appreciate the work it took, and I thank you for sharing it with all of us. _________________ Best regards,

That's pretty cool, James. Any chance that you could add meantone as one of the tuning options? I've never been able to figure out how to adjust meantone E9th for cabinet drop. _________________ -𝕓𝕆𝕓- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |

Great work, James. The offsets for "E's 440 with pedals down" match mine almost to a tee. Cool! _________________ Jackson Steel Guitars

Ross - I think being able to input your own copedent would be awesome. I'm not exactly sure how I could work that out though. Maybe a long term project, I will try and brainstorm a bit.
b0b - Incorporating meantone temperament is a good idea. Just thinking about it now, it doesn't seem like it would be too terribly difficult. I will look into it and see.
I'll keep you posted! |

Very well done, James!
I looked at the original version and could see how much work you put into it. As good as it is, the simpler, redesigned version is probably going to be more popular among a wider audience.
It's given me a number of ideas for small tweaks to try out. Thanks! |

James, I think your chart is a great resource.
As someone who agrees conceptually with ET but can't quite live with it, I found the '30 percent Just Intonation' setting to give a result closest to my own current tuning. That's pretty interesting.
After having fun crunching numbers, I've incorporated one or two little alterations that may well stick.
Really appreciate all your work. |

I suggest that you change the title of this topic to something like "Online Pedal Steel Tuning Calculator", so that it catches people's attention in the forum index. _________________ -𝕓𝕆𝕓- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |

Definitely going to use your chart James (and I second b0b's meantone request) - you deserve a lot more appreciation for your efforts. I've often thought there should be a one stop shop for pedal steel tunings, with a little support perhaps your site can be the place.
Maybe a glossary of terms and some further explanation for newbies would be good. For example I'm not sure why I might choose option 2C: Optimise open string for "pedalled A's are straight up to ET", but I might if I knew why! |
