Here's a video intended to help the new pickers understand use of the 2nd string and the lever that lowers the 2nd string a half-tone.

Bravo Paul! What Paul is showing here is extremely important for using the second string 1/2 tone lower and the theory involved in it. Paul, are you going to address the full tone lower and also the ninth string? This is a very important lesson that has been neglected in the teaching materials out there. I am glad someone finally posted it. That second string is an extremely imporatnt change on the guitar. Thank you.

Kevin:

I haven't had the whole tone drop on the 2nd string in a number of decades. Someone else will have to step up to the plate and give that lesson.

Regarding the 9th string (D), I don't feel qualified to pontificate on that subject. I use it some (to make a low inversion dominant seventh chord, and as a root note two frets up for single string work), but there are probably a lot more uses for it than I am aware of.

If I started a video lesson on the subject of the ninth string, giving what limited knowledge I have, would you (and others) add to the subject with your own YouTube videos?

Paul

Mack:

I am glad you found the video helpful. I learn from every one I create. I played for years (decades) just randomly hitting that knee lever and hoping it sounded right. It was just recently that I took the time to figure out the relationships of the notes. What a revelation. Having to verbalize why you are doing what you are doing strengthens you as a player.

Keep pickin. Paul

Gianni: Glad to help. Don't overlook "Further studies regarding the 2nd string" also posted yesterday. It continues with more uses of the 2nd string and the half tone lower. Paul

Great stuff, Paul. Thanks for taking the time to share with us. Having returned to steel after nearly 30 years I find I'm way more open to ideas now that I've "matured." Back then the 2nd, 7th and 9th strings were not that important. Now, I can understand their value. Thanks again!
