Hey everyone,
I have a question for builders who use plastic laser fretboards. What kind of glue do you use to adhere a plastic fretboard to a wood neck?
I read that Duco Cement Glue is best for gluing plastic binding on a wood body, but my guitar is freshly painted and I fear that If I use duco cement glue, and It gets on the body, It could damage the finish.
I also read that Titebond will fail over time. I was thinking of trying fish glue, but would like to get some feedback first. Any help is appreciated.

We use glue
Recommend against All Screws.
Just kidding!
You don't want to glue on one of those clear acrylic fretboards, you'll see the glue!
For a clear fretboard (such as the reverse-engraved acrylic board on George's fine guitars) screws are the way to go.
Without any disrespect towards Mr Boards, "Recommend against All Glues" is a bit of an odd statement!
You may not want to see the screw-heads, or have holes in your guitar.
Most "stick-on" fretboards are supplied with 3M (or similar) self-adhesive backing.
This is basically a 24-hour cure adhesive kinda like double-sided tape but without the tape, peel off the backing paper & on it goes.
Obviously there's no danger of spilling it on your guitar!
(& no ugly screws! )
I've used this before with no problems, stuck to a wood "blank" fretboard which is glued to the guitar in the normal way during construction.
It works best stuck to a finish rather than bare wood, & will come off if you need to remove it although the residue is a pain to remove it usually comes off with alcohol & no damage to the finish.
I've used a "low tack" version on guitars where I want the option of removing the fretboard more easily. _________________ www.hollowneck.com |

Thanks George and Chris, I appreciate you input.
George, when you wrote: "If -- the Plastic is Opaque. The Double thin sticky is the ticket". Are you referring to thin clear double sided tape?" Thanks for your help.
Chris, I called 3M today after reading your post, and they recommended a couple of different adhesive backing products. I'm expecting a couple of samples soon. I realized after reading your post that I should have painted the neck so that the adhesive would adhere better. I'll apply a coat of shellac.
Thanks for your help.
I was reading the archives and read that some pedal steel players use a 3M double sided tape to secure the fretboard onto their pedal steel guitars. I would be willing to give that a try If I knew more about the product, such as the width, product number etc... anyone familiar with It and can tell me more about It?

Ron, the 3M I've used has "SM 467 MP, 200MP Adhesive" on the backing paper if that helps.
It's better than "double-sided tape" (although it's often referred to as such) as there's no actual tape, just adhesive & a paper backing, so it's thinner than "double-thin" tape & sticks better.
It's supplied on a roll 2' wide.
Most "self-adhesive" products use this kind of "tapeless" adhesive.
George, my "day-job" company sells the materials that you're talking about (though in the UK, sorry!)
The brands we do are "Rowmark" and "I.P.I" & yes, these laser laminates come in a colossal range of different colour combinations, finishes & thicknesses.
Some look just like metal.
I'd recommend checking the engravers section on the sawmillcreek.org forum for your nearest US supplier for these or similar materials.
Most suppliers will happily send you out a "swatchbook" or sample pack, and supply 3M pre-applied if you ask for it. _________________ www.hollowneck.com |

Hey Chris & George. Thanks for the info.
Chris, yes the product numbers of the 3M products you provided is very helpful, thanks.
I think the real challenge will be to find these products with out having to place a special order, and buy in bulk, which can cost hundreds of dollars. I have yet to find a place that even stock these products in NYC.
Regards,

Ron, that could be the same stuff but I'm a little concerned by the "2.0mil" in the description, also $37.68 seems like a lot to spend on a one-off so you're maybe better off going for the stewmac option.
How big a piece do you need?
I'll look into how much it would be for me to ship you some...
@George, drop me a P.M about your ideas I'll be glad to help if I can! _________________ www.hollowneck.com |

Ron I found it at stewmac.com part number #4597
6X8 inch sheets for 2.41 dollars each. Trim to fit and peel N Stick.
For a 1 off piece this seems a good choice. |
Hi George,
Duh, I never thought about checking Stew Mac. That is actually perfect for a one off. I have to order some pots today from stew mac, I'll also order the adhesive sheet. Thanks George.
Chris I PM'd you.
Thank you George and Chris for your constant assistance. |
