Sunrise was Brozman & Bhattacharya's first collaboration. It was released only in India but recently became available for download on iTunes. It's a beautiful record, check it out.

Yes, fantastic album! Glad to see it is on iTunes as it was difficult to obtain.

Thanks for a great tip once again Andy! Can't wait to check out more of Debashish's works; I'm already a long time Brozman fan but never heard this album.

I assume you have heard VM Bhatt, correct?

Sure. I really enjoyed "A Meeting by a River" but DB's playing moves me a lot more than Bhatt's for some reason. Bhatt wasn't very complimentary about Cooder's musicianship after the session even though it won a Grammy. I don't know for sure but DB seems to have a more expansive view of collaborating with Western musicians like Brozman & John McLaughlin.

Have you heard Tabula Rasa with Bela Fleck? Some of that is pretty amazing.

Debashish is truly great, very fiery. I still feel hesitant about buying stuff from iTunes due to the music being compressed. I wish they sold in lossless formats as well as mp3s or mp4s.

Sunrise sounds amazing in the brief previews I listened to. This youtube clip is intense!

I would say that my two biggest pedal steel influences are Debashish & Miles Davis, one for technique, the other for melody. I have a lot of Debashish's CD's, like most Indians he started out recording in the strictly classical raga format. Then like many others, he got Western-er. My favorite CD of his is called "Calcutta Slide Guitar 3", it's a perfect blend of East and West, rather than the unfortunate "world music" trend of sticking some Indian licks on a folksinger's album. Cool There's a deluxe version available with a DVD of several of the songs on the CD played in concert - truly terrifying.

My favorite DB record too. Superhuman technique but an equal dollop of beauty and humanity.

If there are any mandolin fans out there, "Samjanitha" by U. Shinivas is every bit as interesting, varied and West-ear-accessible... we either need to throw out our instruments or bomb the whole continent, harrumph. My hope is that somewhere in Kolkata or Mumbai there's some kid banging away on an old ShoBud who's going to change the world soon.
