Music Row is a Nashville music industry magazine. Every year they publish the Top Ten Album All-Star Musician Awards. Awards are based on most number of points for each Top Ten Album a musician has played on - one point per album. Albums eligible for inclusion entered the Billboard Top Ten Sales Chart between May 1, 2009 and April 30, 2010. Live albums, greatest hits packages, specailty compilations and holiday packages are excluded.
This years awards for Steel Guitar went to Paul Franklin (14 points) Mike Johnson (9) and Dan Dugmore (7).

Yeah, pedal steel is still alive, but I fear in today's "country" music, it is on life support. Congrats to Paul as he well deserves it!! |

Country Music ain't real with out a steel guitar in the song and the right beats from the drummer. Country Music will never die nor will the Steel Guitar. The people running Country Music will die before it,Country Music. And that's the truth.Leo J.Eiffert,Jr. & Pigeons Band. |

Bob, I was wondering the same thing. But in looking at the list, the 3 steel players that are listed played on 30 of the 40 albums on the chart. My guess is some of the albums may not have had steel, or the players left only played on 1 album and were not considered. |

b0b, those are the three guys that do the major label records now.
For years it was a list of four, Pete Drake, Lloyd Green, Weldon Myrick and Hal Rugg.
Before then it was Buddy Emmons, Jimmy Day, Don Helms, Bud Issacs and Jerry Byrd. Buddy did play on records from the 50s until he decided not to anymore. Since the early years of recording before there were really a difference in road guys and studio guys the steel list has gotten shorter and shorter. One good thing, they are still using guys that play very well. I'm affraid that with the way it's going that will not always be the case. Who knows, every dog has his day and everyday ends at some point. _________________ Johnny "Dumplin" Cox

The yearly Music Row Magazine Musician Awards could be one way of historically documenting the current โAโ team. Looking at the other musician categories for 2010, it seems the cut-off point is 3 Top Ten Album credits. Also - there is less music being recorded. Here's a quote from the same Music Row article: โAs with any year thereโs bad news and good news. The bad news is weโve only got 40 eligible titles to work with this year, the lowest amount in over five years. The good news is that itโs only the quantity of albums โ not the quality-that has decreased.โ
Sonny Garrish still works a full schedule.

I just found it hard to believe he wasn't included. Must not be playing on the "major" albums anymore, no? |

Must be sort of a luck-of-the-draw thing. I was under the impression that when it came to bass that Michael Rhodes would be the top dog and not Glenn Worf, but on these number one hits Glenn dominated.
For next year it will likely be different, because for a number of years Glenn has been in Mark Knopfler's band, and they go out for extensive touring every other year. This is the year they have been touring, so for next years awards, Glenn will not have been around nearly as much for studio work. _________________ Mark |
