Smile Hey gang I would really value some input about 24" opposed to 24 1/4" scale lenght. I recently got a router and table and a few inlay/engraving attachments...ie: a free hand routing foot and bits.a precision guide and blades/string cutters....whatever they call'em to cut my own inlays for positions markers etc. for my assorted Dremel tools. So I am mocking up a design to fab my own fretboard from ebony veneer and MOP string for fret markers.Ok all opinions, factual knowledge, experience with, drawbacks ,etc.....thoughts/advice anyone?....Stormy Very Happy

Storm, I build my steels at 24 1/4" scale length. I don't believe there is much of a difference between that and 24" although you may read different opinions of course. I got my fret-cutting jig idea from Martin Weenick and would gladly show you pics of mine if you want to send me your email address.

I am not into inlays as yet. So far, what I have done is use the jig to rout very shallow grooves(less than 1/32" deep) for every fret with a 1/16" straight bit in the dremel. Then I paint in those with white paint and spray lacquer on top of that.
I cut 1/16" thick fretboards out of black walnut.

Stormy,

I sat down at an MCI recently that Jerry Fessenden had. I really liked the way the back neck played (a lot), and he said that 24" is a good length for C6.

For E9, I think it's sustain vs. string breakage. I hardly ever break strings so I wouldn't want to go shorter than 24 1/4, and give up sustain in the upper register of the guitar.

Good luck with your project!

Yes, the zia emblem would work. Plain, easy to make. Sure!
