Beautiful stuff!

I've known Susan for over 20 years now and she's always been a totally superb musician, regardless of the style of music she's into. I don't want to directly quote Big E, but I believe he commented one time that Alcorn is one of the few steel players that actually plays "real jazz." But she's into much, much more than that.

I am a fan. There is a certain sincerity and honesty to even her most challenging stuff that really draws me in.

Susan took some severe criticism from various people over on the UK Steelers site for her 'avant garde' approach to steel playing. She was very generous in her response.

Even if you don't appreciate her musical content (and I do) you have to admire her technique, especially the pick blocking that she demonstrates during this clip.

How can people criticize something they don't understand? I count Susan Alcorn as an influence.

Recently, I've read criticisms leveled against musicians (not only here on the SGF) such as John Coltrane and Joaquin Murphey and many others by people claiming "there is no feeling in the playing". I find that absurd. There is a lot of beauty in what Susan plays--just realize that there is more than one form of beauty.

It never ceases to amaze me how many folks will jump in to criticize others who manage to do something that they themselves will never be able to do, never mind understand!
