My best options in a used guitar:

1) a Sho-Bud Maverick S-10, (3 pedals, 1 lever) looks well-worn

2)waiting for a Carter Starter to show up (they do, occasionally)

3) something else (open to suggestions)?

thanks,

Mike

Stage One
Carpsteel/Legend
GFI Student
BSG S10

Non-Modern but great steels all around for learning and cost effective..
MSA Semi-Classic
Some Sierras

There are loads of new and used options. Out of personal opinion, I would suggest avoiding any 3X1's. You can get a newer or older 3x2/3/4/5 pretty easily. And, while I have never owned one, most people don't give ultra high marks for a Carter Starter.. Good, yes..

YMMV...

Do you have a budget? You might get better info if you mentioned that..

If you can't find a good student model (like the ones listed above), you may try for a used Dekley or MSA singleneck. They seem to go for much cheaper than other brands and are decent "pro" guitars. I recently bought a Dekley off a friend as a "travel" steel, found a flight case to use for it etc, and it has worked out great so far. If you can, buy local and have someone knowledgeable check out the mechanics. Or you can buy from any of the reputable dealers who frequent the forum. Avoid ebay, usually.

Thanks to all who replied.

There is sort of a budget--In the last couple of days I saw a Carter for 450 locally and the shobud for 350 (with Goodrich pedal) and thought this might be the time to take the plunge.

The Carter now has been sold and I would like to find out more about Stage One and the others mentioned.

There is no doubt a Stage One is superior to the two you mentioned, but you also mentioned "budget".

A used Carter Starter is way better than a Mav, and can
be found for half the price of a Stage One.

Of course the resale value of the better guitar is higher so buy the best you can afford.

I had a list of requirements when I was looking for a new steel...all pretty much caused from an accident & health related issues .
1) RELIABILITY didn't want to start out w/ repairs 2)WEIGHT had to be fairly lite
3) BUDGET FRIENDLY why spend $$$$$ on a chance of limited usefulness
4)SOUND "not" cheap/crappy
5)EQUIPPED had to be 3pd/4kl - did not want to settle for less
6)CUSTOMER SERVICE had to be dependable, thoughtful, helpful, understanding
7) LOOKS had to look classic...like a quality(expensive) steel should
8)GOOD ENOUGH for a pro to play (thanks to Michael Douchette...for taking time to discuss merits of this guitar...MAJOR DECIDING FACTOR)
9)WAIT as in I didn't have to Exclamation
10)and it came with a pedal board / not all tore up ! Laughing (sorry couldn't resist) Laughing

Very Happy CHOICE : my brand new teak mica STAGE ONE from Doug Earnest Very Happy

started out 30 years ago on Mavericks .They were fine then, but why now when training material - $$$$ - quality instruments are what they are today.

Oh Well Wanted another ShoBud - could have afforded another, didn't want to lug or repair one . Oh Well Made right choice for me ...no regrets ! Very Happy

See picture of new guitar in other post .

Good luck ! Smile

The difference between the Stage One and Carter Starter is astonishing. Buy the former, avoid the latter, this is the best advice you'll get this month, my friend!

I've seen both with my students, the Stage One is the best bargain around, plays great, sounds great, incredible value. The little you save with the Carter will only lead to aggravation.

Stage One. It might be a big step but you will use it longer and not feel like trading up for a long time. Don D

Mr. Vantine, thanks for the kind words. This was taken by Ronny Light at one of my sessions this week. No one would be disappointed with a Stage One. Best out there.
