I've used a Black Box for All of my recordings in the past 4 years or so, for lap steel and pedal steel. It makes the guitars sound a little stronger, fatter, more midrange, etc., although it's not a preamp. I don't use it for live gigs though. I have enough stuff to carry and plug in. Cool

Here's my older, vintage Blackbox. I always had it on stage, and fiddled with the knobs constantly! Told people it was the real secret to my sound.
I'm sure that Brad copied my idea! Not! [8^)

I have a Blackbox, it's very nice. Adds a subtle tube enhancement that is sweet. It has a tone control too which is nice. Run from the pickup to the box, to the amp. I used it on my pedal steel until I got their Revelation Tube pre Smile

For lap steel I recently got the Sansamp 'Blond' DI box that I also use. They have a series of these called the 'Character Series'. It's more noticible in the circuit and you can dial in as much tube character as you like - and distortion too. Works as a DI or a stompbox or a preamp - really! As a preamp into a stompbox reverb and into a PA or powered cabinet - it's the smallest, lightest preamp on the planet Smile Excellent for direct recording as well.
