Hi folks - I have a student & I'm trying to find the old wb page where buddy lays out "pockets" for E 9th.
Anyone know that page? E9, NOT C6.
Thanks in advance! _________________ Just 'cause I look stupid, don't mean I'm not. |

Start by searching for "pockets" under the Pedal Steel section of the forum, try the Tablature section too. _________________ Mullen G2; Fender Tone Master Twin Reverb; Goodrich L-120 |

Thanks for replying. Larry the link you sent is for C6. I'll dig around some more for E9.
Thanks again! _________________ Just 'cause I look stupid, don't mean I'm not. |

I would check with Larry Behm, here in Oregon, who I believe has a dvd or instructional material on playing the pockets. He has a wealth of knowledge and has been playing professionally for a long time. |

Paul has a cd or I guess it was a tape with the E-9 pockets, and it is a great one. |

IMO, the E9th neck is so richly blessed with melodic options ON the frets of the chords, pockets don't play a role like they do on C6th or Spanish guitar.
If you're playing a piece where dom7/with chords play well, you can kinda work a pocket between the open fret and two frets back with the A# lever (frets 12 and 10 for let of E).
.
Instead of pockets, I just think of an intermediate position between voicings of the chord _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

I've been having some fun with this... These are all C Major scale note positions on strings 5 through 10, on the E9th neck. NO PEDALS USED! Try playing these notes in any order, against this chord progression. The tracks meat starts at about 0:35. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2e82UetMJMk Sounds Jazzy and or Swingy on the E9th neck? They also work against the major chord progressions in the key of "C". If you play through these for a while, little patterns or "Pockets" will start to emerge.

Hi Lane,
I was able to copy and past it directly into Libre Office from the above post without error. What word processor are you using?
By the way, I wrote this one directly into the forum post. If I'm in a hurry I'll sometimes do that. I too have occasionally found the forum coding troublesome. But, if I want something bad enough, I'll get it. |

This is good, thanks Dick. The older gentlman I'm "teaching", doesn't really want to go into theory, and I'm no good at it either. This is more of a "paint by numbers" approach which is fine by me.

That wasn't a word processor, just the web browser rendering it (Dolphin 11.0 under Android Ice Cream Sandwich) _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

For a newbie the charts above, while helpful, would be confusing.
My goal as a teacher is to have you up and playing along to "Your Cheating Heart" at the end of the first session. From there we continue to build on chord positions and grips.
I have sat with over 60 players, they all come away with a smile. Some may never come back but that is their choice.

Lane, if you hold your phone sideways (horizontal image) it will work. It does on mine. |

I practice this drill within 4 frets:
3rd fret open....G
3rd fret A&B ....C
5th fret A&B.....D
6th fret A&F.....G
This works on string 345....456....568....68-10
Go up and down playing 1 string at a time, then 2 then 3 There other minors and 7ths within this pocket but this is a good drill especially going back. |

Ten years or so ago, I never would've imagined folks from all over the world helping out with a little old guitar lesson.
Thank you all so very much! _________________ Just 'cause I look stupid, don't mean I'm not. |

I use this all the time, too. Pushes you to develop your own pockets and moves. |
