Two of the finest, playing together on stage tonight on PBS channels starting at 8:00PM EST; recorded LIVE earlier this year [I think] from the Troubador. Smile

I've been hearing some of this one, and Carol's tunes come off really well. Good to see something out by her again. What a talent she's been from an early age, even tho I couldn't stand hearing her circa 1970. I had no clue then that she was the one behind Little Eva's Locomotion and many other big and cool tunes of the early 60s.
I ignored James' stuff so I can't comment further on his...

Ron,

Carol was one of the premier songwriters working in the Brill Building in NYC very early on in the mid 50's. She collaborated with a guy named Hoffman [forgot his 1st name at the moment] on many big hits for the likes of Little Eva, the Chiffons, The Shirelles and others.
Two other members of that elite tour de force were both Paul Anka and Paul Simon [believe it or not].

Paul Anka was madly in love with Carol. His big hit "Oh Carol" came out of that no-where, short-lived teen crush. These folks were writing all this stuff in their late teens.

The Brill Building was like a super song writing factory, all put together by Columbia or RCA records in order to keep hits coming.

Sorry you don't care much for JT, but, to each his own. Cool

James Taylor was the first act at the GOO Briley Parkway. He and band were awesome!
He brought Carley Simon out to sing "Mocking Bird"! Loved it!
I'm a huge fan of Carol Kings, also!

Wasn't it Gerry Goffin? He was the lyricist and King was the composer. They were also married for a number of years.

Right. She wrote the music, and he wrote the words, to "He Hit Me And It Felt Like A Kiss". They are no longer married.

Geffen is one of the richest music folk in LA/US, made lot's of smart moves/investments beyond his regular job.

Didn't Neil Sedaka write Oh Carol? They worked hard together as well for years. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neil_Sedaka

Nope, I'm no a Taylor or Sedaka fan, but there's no denying the immense talents they both possess. That 'overplayed on radio' burnout killed lot's of my enjoyment for many artists.

I guess it was Sedaka & Goffin, cum to think of it.

Big mistake on my part. Oh Well

Hope I'll actually wake up in the morning.

Hard to deal with professionals.

I'm halfway now thru the PBS presentation.

Just like all PBS presentations.

God-awful groveling for donations: WITCH,
over the years have proved that the only time to beg for do-re-mi is to put on the big boys.

I turned it off, about 1/2 hour into it.

Huge dissapointment; from two outstanding singers/musicians.

They did not sing together. That's what annoyed me to the max.

They both did their "thing"; but not TOGETHER!!!

Isn't that what we were hopin' to see? Hear?
HuH?

EGOs - smart, educated, wise, arrogant.

BUT - could not get beyond their frailities.

Nope, made it all the better for me, but it indeed might have benefited JT's numbers to have her on his.

David Geffen and Gerry Goffin. Two different guys.
Geffen was the founder of Asylum Records and later Geffen Records.
And one of the richest...

? Confused Confused Confused

Ron, what's your beef with JT?, anyway.

My beef with the whole presentation [and I should have known] was that it would be an intruisive fund drive.

PBS stations used to have fund drives only at specific times through-out a year [season, whatever]. And that's when they would bring out Peter, Paul & Mary, James Taylor, John Fogerty, you name it............

And after the fund drive was over, it would go back to the usual, Masterpiece Theatre, Miss Marple, Unfunny English sitcoms (sorry Britain bros) and on and on and on......

NOW......PBS fund drives are a constant source of nuisance. They are omnipresent.

What this big switch does for me, is cause a lot of resentment, will never ever give them one dime, and will just not bother to go there and watch anything.
You tell me?, Are they increasing their funds by doing this? I doubt it. Because that is why you see more and more of it.

Sorry - off track here a bit. Oh Well

When you receive your DVD, in response to your generous donation, you will see them sing together.

Chip,
I believe it was in 1974 or 75. I was working at Music City Manufacturers at the time.
Great concert! Smile

Really! '74 - '75?

I guess I really got taken. James actually had more hair back then, didn't he?

OK, sorry. I didn't mean to dis PBS that much.

But, Andy Rooney is not going to live forever, so I'm apprenticing for his coveted CBS seat.

I'm a grump. I admit it. I think, contrary to most medical opinions, it's very healthy to be angered and let it out. It feels good to vent.

I like both of them. Maybe I should've watched more of it. The fund-raising axed it for me.

Thank Newt Gingrich for being the catalyst to get the Endowments For The Arts budget gouged.

OK, thanks Newt. Actually, in these parts, newts are just sweet, lovable, little orange & green polka-dotted salamanders. They, would never think about cutting funds for the Arts and PBS; seeing how they are routinely showcased on the NATURE series, among other science venues.

They usually can only be spotted after a summer rainfall, in typical dank forests in Western MA.

Haven't seen the PBS show but the DVD/CD Live at the Troubadour from 2007 is pretty good except for the muddy audio mix. Carol King is just a great commercial pop writer and she sings here with more energy and conviction than her living room tour record of a few years back. Taylor is Taylor: he does one thing but he does it with a lot of professional polish and their voices blend well together.

Very Cool, Andy...and everyone else too.

There is no disagreement that I have with those great artists.

It's my problem. I was lookin' and hopin' for MORE.

Maybe not a good way to go.

Who is Chip Fossa? A little jerk. BUT - a jerk with an opinion.

I don't shy away that easily. On the other hand, here on the SGF, I prefer to sit and observe. So, I do get caught in the lobster trap, now and then, and the only thing I regret...........is the lobster. And where are those steamers, too? Oh Well

Gerry Goffin wrote at least two hit songs after he stopped writing with her.
"It's not the Spotlight" by Rod Stewart, and "I've got to use my imagination" by Gladys Knight and the Pips.

Chip, sorry 'bout ol' James, he's great but grates on me just like hearing Manfred Mann's version of Blinded By The Light makes me go postal to this day. Way too much airplay when I was a lessening but still dedicated FM radio listener circa '70-'75. I preferred The Stooges, who didn't get any airplay...

Ron,

I can see where JT could grate on you. He is pretty over exposed, true. Just as Willy Nelson was for a while, and of course, the omnipresent 'Boss', Bruce Springsteen.

I admit Taylor can get on my nerves sometimes, too; but at other times, it feels good to pull out his early stuff; especially with Red Rhodes sitting in on steel. Probably more nostalgia here than anything else - a simpler and much better time IMHO. Oh Well
