Topic: Left hand lap steel challenge |

Customer contacted me and said he understood that left handed instrunents don't have a high resale value, so could I please build a lap steel that could easily be changed to a right handed instrument if he ever decided to sell it. Here it is, the only thing needed to change it into a right hand lap steel is a new nut and a set of strings. Photo is shown in right hand position.

and switch the vol. and tone pots 
but the vol. is not in the right place anyway for 'pinky swells'. Gotta love bi-lateral symetry!

Nut can't be reversed because it is L shaped with mounting screws on the flat part at the bottom. See attached photo for typical nut. Pots are in position as specified by the customer. He uses foot pedal instead of pinky.

That's a great looking guitar, Robert. I really like the wood you chose. I realise it's too late now, but about the nut, I wonder if instead of an "L" shape, could it be an upside down "T" Then it could be reversed without replacing it. The unused side of the "T" could just lay flat on top of the fretboard (or underneath the fretboard.) Oh, never mind, just a silly thought. Your guitar looks great.

| Out of 180 lap steels only two have been left hand, and one of those customers didn't have any intention of ever changing to right hand. This was the first universal left hand, right hand steel I've made so no plans were in place for drawings and machining of a universal nut. I notch each nut to match the gauge of strings, so possibly, a new owner might want a new nut, anyhow. Some rarely used custom parts are simply not cost effective to implement on a universal basis. |
