I've bagged the dobro > Baggs DI > clueless soundguy scenario and gone to dobro > Baggs DI > Deluxe Reverb > mic > soundguy deal, which bypasses soundguys brain and goes straight to finger-on-fader. What's a little feedback between friends? Similar experiences?
Thanks to Joe Wilson of Steppininit for straightening me out.
Loud(er) and proud in MI,

Good info, Drew.
What do you think it is about a straight DI signal that causes soundmen so much trouble? Is it because they feel the need to start EQ'ing it? |

Part of it is stage volume, if I'm playing with a band, be it country band/ songwriter chick /jamgrass band at medium/large venue I don't want to be at the mercy of the monitor/FOH guy at all. |

Drew, what type of pickup do you have in your dobro? _________________ Mark |

Conetone, made by Steve Olson of Elderly fame.

Running the dobro thru a DRRI is the quick n easy way of solving the monitor issue, though it certainly isn't the best solution. I plan on getting a graphic EQ stomper to help notch things. A dedicated acoustic amp would be better but not affordable. Also closer proximity to drums can mean problems. |

I think we've had this discussion before about Conetone, but I don't recall getting an answer to this question from the past thread: the Conetone appears to be only made for "biscuit bridge"" resonators, is that the type of guitar you play?
I would venture to guess that the vast majority of us that play lap style, on a squareneck dobro, have spider bridge guitars. _________________ Mark |

Steve custom built me a pickup for my Goldtone.
I'll get the specs from him. |

Cool - I would like to learn more about it.
At some point later this year I will be taking the dreaded Fishman "donut" pickup out of my Clinesmith and my first choice is the Fishman Aura setup, which overcomes a lot of these feedback and soundman issues, but I like to explore all avenues before whipping out the credit card. _________________ Mark |

Steve custom-made two elements attached to the spider legs and then adhered to the cone. |

I don't have any specific advice to offer, but my rule of thumb is to have as much control as possible over your own sound BEFORE it gets to the soundguy. Seems like adding your own amp for onstage monitoring is a step in that direction! |
