Beginners Notes #120-An Idea Using The Up Lever ^
On my steel the up lever ^ used in conjunction with the “A” pedal yields a half step lower.

Thanks for this Dick. Is it advised to tune that half step lower you get with the A Pedal/Vert combo using a split tuning set up of some sort? |

Hi Ross,
Yes Sir, that 1/2 tone ^ lower on the 5th string is tuned using the split on my Derby. On my steel with the "A" pedal down, the half tone lower is tuned at the end plate(Nylon Hex Nut), then with the "A" pedal released the half tone lower it tuned at the "Split" allen screw. I think of that as the "absolute lower" of the string. The Derby is capable of splits on every string in this way. I believe most of the newer steels allow this for this.
Thank you for the interest and question.

Thanks Dick,
I have a Franklin change that takes string 5 down to A so I can't use the screw on the back of the changer for the vert lever split. I think I'll need to add another rod to get the split in question. |

Ross, I don't have that change to "A", maybe someday I'll explore that a little. Also not familiar with the Franklin, but I'm sure there are others on here that might have already dealt with getting both changes. Maybe Jack Stoner will chime in on this one, he's a Franklin player and very knowledgeable.
I just noticed you have the Franklin Change, maybe not a Franklin. My mistake, but Mr. Stoner or someone else still may have an answer.
My best to you... |

confirmed Ross, you won't tune that V lever half tone lower on the set screw on the back of the changer
you can tune that V lever half tone lower like Dick wrote :
