Fellow Steelers! I've heard for years about this Youtube video of "I Saw The Light" from 1991. Well, I thought maybe a few out there might want to see something else. There is another video now from 1990 ISGC. Also, some more recent material from a performance I did at the Acuff Theater here in Nashville. The main reason on wanted to let you know this is because I have seen some postings about Zane Beck's tuning innovation. I'd love to have more conversation on my approach to his tuning. Simply put, I believe the tuning enhances the E9 approach (I have added a few modern pulls). I have the 8th string now tuned to E instead of D. This allows a more conventional approach to the E9 sound. At the same time there is certainly plenty of parallels to the C6. I think the most sizeable difference there is just the voicing of notes. At one point, I actually tuned my guitar to C. Didn't necessarily give me a C6 sound but it was a nice sound with swing type material. Check out some my Youtube. There are 4 videos in all now.

Good stuff...Where can I get one of those two foot long steel guitars you played on C JAM.
Zane could you share some of the other changes you have added to the ZB tuning. |

Hey Bob. Yeah, two foot long is right! I recently got a D-10 Emmons in a trade and seriously tried to play it. It was like sitting a 100 foot long conference table. Just posted some "first thoughts" on ZB Tuning in the tunings section. That's a pretty big change that Zane might not approve of but he was such a jazz/swing player that it was not nearly as practical for him to use. What's neat is I have just added a knee (RKRR) for this 8th string pull from E to D. Another little secret is that I use this same knee to move my 2nd string F# to a G#. This, of course, has become popular in the past 10 years on most every E9 Tuning. So where ZB had 4 pedals and 5 knees...I use 5 pedals and 6 knees. The only root change in the tuning is what I addressed in that thread about this 8th string approach. Before Zane passed he was pretty proud of some of my accomplishments with his tuning and it seemed his desire that I was going to prove it was a manageable and musical copendant for any style.
All that said, the most useful part of his tuning from a commercial standpoint is actually strings 1 thru 6. Just wait 'til I start my argument for that side of the fretboard. ![Smile](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

Zane, it's nice to have your input here. Of course, many of us remember you from the St. Louis conventions, your blazing speed picking and your association with the great Zane Beck.
Looking forward to hearing more from you.
BTW, I enjoyed the YouTube videos a lot. Thanks. JO. |

Hi Zane
Awesome playing on the videos. I've watched the "I Saw The Light" vid a bunch of times. How come I can't find any of those licks on your "Hooked On Steelin" Course? LOL
Do you play the steel on the Terry Terrell Cd's that you produce? Terry is one of my favorite gospel singers. Eddie |

Eddie, thank you!!! Yes I wrote most all of Terry's songs and played a good bit of the steel on those recordings. Terry is the closest I have ever heard to George Jones. I think that music I worked on with Terry will live on a long time. I only wish more people could hear it because it's certainly very inspirational. (And country too!) _________________ Zane King
