I am new to the steel guitar, but a 32 year musician. I purchased a Sho Bud LDG a few months back that is signed by Loyd Green and it says "To Cletus". The guitar came out of the Birmingham, Al. area. Does anyone know anything about this guitar? I would love to know about it.

a basic (maybe stupid) question... were all LDG guitars made with the green finish? (I know, I know...that's what the G stands for). Just wondering. I saw a golden amber colored one once. _________________ To write with a broken pencil is pointless. |

Tom...During the Gretsch "Super Pro" era, there were LDG guitars that were factory built in other finishes beside green. These normally had a small sticker under the "LDG" with the word "Custom"... The guitar that you saw may have been a victim of severe finish fading however. I once met a player with a LDG in what appeared to be a light walnut, when I asked about it he lifted the corner of the pad and some of the original green stain was still present. I believe the early Sho-Buds were finished using vegetable dye and did not hold up well when subjected to direct sunlight for prolonged periods. |

I received this via email:

Cletus Hopkins who is, I believe, a member of the Forum is a good buddy of mine from down around Birmingham, Al. Years ago, when he bought that steel, he brought it out to my house and I signed it for him and we spent an enjoyable afternoon together.
Many of those LDGs I signed without knowing the person and was asked to do so by a third party. But it was extra special when a friend had one and asked me to sign. |

Loyd,
Thanks for weighing in on the LDG. I am an old history teacher and when I saw the names, my mind got to wondering as to the whos and whys of the name.
Thanks Again.

Didn't some of the LDGs have "SP" under the "LDG" to designate it as a custom colour? _________________ Jackson Steel Guitars

Chris...I stand corrected. The decal did as you stated read "SP" which as I remember being told stood for "special paint". |
