Topic: Machineheads which way to wind |

This is a pic I saw on the Forum today, I hope Bernard Curnow doesn't mind me using it to ask the question, Is this wound the correct way?
Mine are wound this way and I'm not happy, they seem stiff. I think the strings should pass under the string posts on the machines not over them, to be the same as on a regular guitar, thoughts anyone? ( Richard Burton once talked about this on the forum some time ago, but I can't find it now)

Stuart, I didn't find Richard's topic that you refer to, but here is a link to a poll on the subject that I posted some time ago. Although some players treated the question as if it was a no brainer, a few, including Richard, voted under.
It appears the overwhelming consensus is over, but whatever works for you. I don't have any data to support my opinion, but it seems to me that under would create a sharper angle resulting in an even stiffer feel than the over method? |

For What its worth..Being a guitar player you are taught you always wind away from the nut.This is to avoid unnecessary cutting of the string should there be a sharp edgae or burr on the tuning hole where the string goes in.I have used this method on my psg and have yet to have any breakage issues.

Jerry I guess what I am asking really is, will machineheads work correctly in both directions. The pressure winding it one way will push the wormgear downwards, the other way will lift it towards the button. Do they have a thrust washer both above and below the wormgear. this is what was discussed in the other thread, which I can't find at the moment either.
Someone mentioned it would wear everything badly in the wrong direction.
On a regular guitar the force pushes the wormgear and therefore the button downwards, presumably against a wearing bush or similar. If the steel is wound as above, the the force pushes the worm upwards, but is there a similar wear face there???

Machine heads on PSG's are generally like screws, clockwise to tighten (raise pitch), counter to lower. Also, the vertical angle of the string to the nut is less acute this way.
On guitars it's the opposite direction, but now look at the horizontal angle of the string. It is generally in line with the nut, or at least on the side closest to the string line, which improves tuning stability.
Of course, it will work wound either way, and I dont think it will wear any differently, since the same machine head is used on both PSG and guitar.

| Every one I have ever seen the string comes over the top.To me 2 important things in replacing strings is. 1 cut the string long enough to get off the cross hole when it is tuned. I had a new string to break at the key while playing. The string wrapped over my bar hand and stuck to the bone in my ring finger right beside my ring. Hurt real good. 2 Don't let enough string go through the key hole till it scrapes the body as it turns. My MSA is white micarta and it has scratches that get dark and are hard to clean. All from someone letting to much string be pushed through. good steelin[list=][/list] |

Rule of thumb. Keys on left side of keyhead turn
counterclockwise to tighten and right side turn
clockwise to tighten.
So if a Fender with all 6 on the left side you would
turn counterclockwise to tune up.
Steel guitar keyheads work the same principal. |
