Pat, good question. I have wondered about the same myself. I have always thought it has to do with the round cap on the front that seems to be press-fit into its hole. If you find some way of popping that cap out....
If you have a key you don't mind wrecking, try this:
with the key standing up on the shaft end, fit a socket wrench onto the cap end that is large enough to not touch the cap and give the socket a blow with a wooden mallet.
Either that, or simply grasp the key and smash the shaft end down on a hardwood surface. _________________ BenRom Pedal Steel Guitars

Dumb question, but have you tried loosening the top screw that actually holds the key on? Sometimes my grovers bind up a bit on my MSA and it feels like something inside is rubbing, but if I back off that screw a quarter turn or so it resolves the issue. |

No Randy...it's on my new build, i don't have any problems with my first build steel with the one you mentioned and it's been like that for 2 years
Ian...i've tried to slack the screw but it's not there the problem seems to be inside.
Bent...i didn't try anything yet but will check it further more if i can salvage the key...if not i will just buy one if i can.
thanks. _________________ Comeau SD10 4x5, Comeau S10 3x5, Peavey Session 500,Fender Telecaster,Fender Stratocaster, Fender Precision,1978 Ovation Viper electric. Alvarez 4 strings Violin electric.

I have had both new Grover and Schaller sets where a single key was just wrong, and in both cases the company provided a free replacement. If you find out early on and send it in, you won't be stuck playing a five (or nine) string guitar. |

I loosened all of my Spertzel Keys on my Dekley (29 years old) by removing the screws that hold the buttons and Removing the washers and bushing and Giving each key a Squirt of Machine oil made by Yomega High Performance Lubricant, Fall River , Ma 02723-0402 Its Brand Name is Brain Lube. My Dekley had sat up for most of its 29 years and the grease inside the keys had hardened. This sounds like your problem. Any light machine oil should work such as 3 in 1.
Once you get the buttons off and bushings, The oil should seep down the Key shaft and get into the gearing inside the Tuning Key Unit and Loosen up the hardened grease. You might need to use a string winder and give them a good workout. I did this when Changing Strings and All keys operate like new. My problem was from Non-use |

PAT I had the same problem with some grover keys on my MSA. I had to replace the whole set. Good news is I kept the old set. May be able to help you out if the oil trick does not work. There is two or more sizes which we would have to discuss. good luck |
