I'm just wondering...does anyone here use some kind of "universal" setup with only 10 strings? Or any number less than 12? What's the setup you use?

Mr. Jan Visser has created a 10-string Universal
His web site is:
www.promotamusic.com
NB! It's in Dutch!

You can get a translation using Google. It's not good but you will get the jest of it.

Here is a translation of an article that Mr. Visser has written about the Universal Tuning.

http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=nl&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.promotamusic.com%2FfolderIndex%2FfolderHTML%2FwritingsWatIsUniverseleStemming.html

If you write an email to him (address on the home page) he will answer in English!

Here is an interview with him (in English) where he speaks of his 10-string Universal.

I have a Kline 12U and I set my Kline 10 like the first 10 strings on the 12...I have a knee that drops the 8th (E) to D and a pedal (the 4th) that lowers the 7th (F#) to F...so basically 2 of the C6 type changes...not good enough for a "real" 6th player, but I suck at 6th so plenty good for the little I do.

This may be the same tuning that Jan Visser uses. Couldn't stand wading through the clumsy translation in enough detail to be sure.

Sneaky Pete Klienow used an 8 string "reverse" universal tuning that you can find here:
http://b0b.com/tunings/stars.html#b6pk

You can expand on that or use it with your Fender 400, like Pete did. You can do a search and find discussion about it here or go to the Fender Steel Forum for more discussions:

It's a B6 tuning with E9 style AB pedals so you get the pedal mashing sounds, as well as partial pulls from standard C6. I've messed around with it a bit and really enjoy it.

I've played around with the Sneaky Pete tuning a bit...it's fun and it's got a cool and different sound to it.
Most U-12 setups have the A and B changes on the B6 side too, by releasing the E>D# lower, and using the G#>F# (or F#>G#) change, so the pedal mashing sound is still there...

I looked at the Jan Visser tuning and stuff...not a great translation, but I got the idea. It seems to have all the essentials, though it doesn't make sense to me why he moved stuff around from the first 10 strings of the "standard" universal setup.

the late al marcus has some interesting ideas
http://www.cmedic.net/~almarcus/almarcus7.htm

but i wonder what universal really means
a guitar is universal with 6 strings and no pedals

what musical problem do you need a solution to?

I have posted my setup on the Forum on numerous occasions. It's basically an E9/B6 tuning without the two bass strings. I pull the 9th string B up to a D on a KL just as you would on the 12-string tuning. I use the vertical to split back the C# raises to C. When playing pedals-down in the A6th mode, this lever gives you a IV chord. When you let off of the pedals and pull the B to a D, you get your V chord. Holding the pedals down while dropping the E's gives you a II chord. All this in the "6th" mode. There, I just played a 4-chord song in the "6th" mode and never moved the bar!!!
You just use the E9th KL changes to alter the A6th side of the E9th tuning. You only need 3 pedals and 4 KL's for the complete setup.

My 8 string D6/G isn't "universal" because there are a lot of E9th and C6th parts that can't be played on it, but it can handle the basics of country, jazz, blues, rock, western swing, etc. In what I play, expression and interpretation of the music is more important than playing exactly what other people can play.

It all depends on what you're trying to accomplish with a "universal" tuning. If you have to have that high, thin G# and the ringing chromatic strings, you aren't going to be able to get a lot of low end from a 10 string copedent. That's most of what I gave up.

I think to get a really decent univeral, ya gotta have 12 strings, anything less is just a sacrifice that you probably will regret if you like to do the 6th stuff. I have tried 10 string universals twice, was disappointed both times. But, different strokes for different folks, give me my Univeral 12 any time. But will admit, I am very comfortable on a D-10 as well & have switched back & forth quite a bit over my 30 some years of pedal steel playing.

Paul Franklin's C6 Pedabro tuning includes his entire C6 tuning plus 3 additional pedals to cover the basic E9 changes. He mentioned it in a thread a while back. Here it is:

I've got a Sierra S8U, and a Sho-Bud S10U.
The 8 string is a 5x4 and has E9th Pedals A,B,C, and B6th pedals 5 & 6.
Levers (left to right) are E>F, B>Bb, G#>G, E>Eb.
Top to bottom is G#, F#, E, B, G#, F#, E, B.

The 10 string is similar but is a 7x5.
