By no means do I want this response to be offensive to you nor in any way sarcastic.

HOWEVER........do you spend much/any time listening to records of country bands?

There are all kinds of examples out there for you to hear and get the idea.......

The JERRY BYRD web site has presented countless tunes with Jerry using the volume and/or tone controls. Other steel players have used them in different ways including Buddy Merrill, Noel Bogss, Speedy West, etc. You might check out You Tube.

It would be hard to explain, I feel, all of the variations of when/how to use it.

Two main uses:

-) volume swells/"violining" - where you pick a chord/note with the volume low, and then fade it in; used to get violin-like sounds without a lot of attack at the beginning.

-) making notes/chords sustain longer; you generally set your "normal" playing volume with the volume pedal closed down about halfways; you keep it in that position when hitting the strings, and when the note slowly fades, you begin opening up the vol. pedal, so that the output volume stays the same over a longer period of time, while the note is decaying (needs quite a bit of practice to make it sound even, without the volume swelling or fading) - that's the way most pedal steelers use volume pedals, gives the impression of "endless" sustain.

And they can be used to set the volume of your steel to an appropriate level but I guess you already knew that. Shocked

(I don't use mine for special effects but just to adjust the volume when my fingers are picking.)

Hello Ray
I have spent many years listening to country music..I also spend time listening to other music mexican music for an example but I dont know how the trumpet gets to make the sound it dose..BUT if I wanted to play trumpet then I would be asking how do you get the trumpet to sound like that..Or how do you get that note to sound like that...
You tube Ive watched and listened to lots. BUT I hear the music see the guys hand with the bar and picking hand but I carnt see when he uses the volume pedal I carnt see what strings he picks.....Regards Paul

Paul, it is not necessarily a good idea to try and use a volume pedal during the early stages of learning. For one thing, you already have enough to focus on, trying to master left and right hand technique, as well as timing and intonation.

As to the slides, while there may be a volume pedal involved in what you are hearing, there is also a lot you can do with playing technique to make them sustain more.

Like Charles Emerson Winchester, I find it best to work on one thing at a time, learn to do it well, and then move on. Oh Well
