I've got a pick up gig this weekend and have to cover this lead guitar part on guitar. I've got it pretty close with a capo on second fret and hammer on between frets six/seven and the open A on the third string. Something is missing though is there a banjo tuner or bender on the track? Also who played steel on the recording was it BB?

Hi Mark -

Joshua Motohashi did the steel on Radney Foster's recording of "The Running Kind." FF.

My favorite cut on that album produced by Bruce Bouton. Mark, good luck. You've got your work cut out for you. I always wanted to bust those licks. The licks you are talking about are the signature licks. Sounds like a bender on the low string sometimes. There are at least two elctrics and one acoustic on that song. Great steel work also. Good pick.

A huge amen to that,Kevin. Big time work to pull it off with taste. I'm covering both lead guitar and steel on this gig, so I'm trying to cop both parts and it ain't easy! The frontman does a nice job on Merle songs, he has Central Valley roots. Since the gig is tomorrow afternoon I'll be woodshedding tonight. That intro and lick that runs through the song is critical, I won't be able to switch back to steel for the solo when it goes to to 5, I'll do my best. Wish me luck...

Some of the parts on the solo sound like a B-bender to me, and you can see the bender on Mike McAdam's Tele in the video. But he may be adjusting a tuning gear on that intro part - it's not the typical bender sound to my ears.

Great version of a great tune. You definitely have your work cut out to do both the Tele and pedal steel parts, good luck.

Those sound like fairly common non-mechanical bends on the tele. Possibly a hip-shot or Keith tuner on the low notes, but definitely not a bender.
Maybe Bruce could enlighten us?

Some nice steel and a couple quick shots of our dearly departed Jimmy Crawford on that video. Smile

Thanks for all the input and ideas on The Running Kind guitar/steel work. I was able to get the Tele licks pretty close, just had to follow that awesome steel break with the melody (pretty safe doing that)Anyhow the gig came off really well and the singer/bandleader was knocked out that I had spent time getting the licks as close as I could on short notice. He did some Ernest Tubb, Bob Wills and Buck that had me pretty busy-how does one guy cover Leon,Elden, Roy, etc...I did my best and had SO much fun playing that classic music again.

I agree, and the song is a keeper, but Crawford gets a better visual shake here:
