Jazz Textures - Christopher Woitach
This is my first instructional video on TrueFire, a great company with lots of great stuff in all genres.
Soon I'll have this directly through my website, but until then, it's available at the link below. Forumites are encouraged to let me know if they bought one, so I can donate to bOb and the Forum.
Enjoy - I'm real proud of this!

That is an excellent concept for a video and one that escapes many students--comping between your lines and filling in the gaps with different textures. Very nice! _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

Thanks, guys! I couldn't ask for two better recommendations from anyone, and it means even more coming from players of your caliber.
Mike - I appreciate all the videos you've made available for steel - useful for anyone, not just lap players, in my opinion. Thanks!
David - Reece tells me you're going to be coming over to help out with next week to help out with the camp. If you drink coffee, I'm sending him some of my home-roasted brew, so I can be there in spirit, so have a cup on me! _________________ Christopher Woitach

Christopher,
That is the sound of solo Jazz Guitar
that I prefer most. Absolutely beautiful!
I would like to hear that "timbre" come
off a Steel Guitar. Soft and easy..
I like our steel jazz players also but it
seems very agressive compared to your sound.
It's all great but I really like what you
do.
Good luck.

I'm really glad you like the sound - it is exactly what I'm trying for in my steel playing - it probably won't get quite as warm (picks, etc) but I'm using it as a template to shoot for.
Thank you! _________________ Christopher Woitach

Christopher,
I wish you all the luck and hope
you keep us updated with sound files
from time to time. I know I would look
forward to that!
I find the modern steel pick-ups
hot and bright in order to cut thru
the band. Works well and I have no
problem with that.
What's your opinion on a Jazz Guitar
pickup for a Lap Steel. I think this
would afford a nice warm sound for
Solo Lap Steel Playing.
What's your take on such an idea?

I haven't experimented with pickups on steel guitar yet, although the one I chose for my new MSA U12 is an Alumatone (not sure if this is the correct name?), which is supposed to be a warm jazz pickup. I think it would depend on how many strings you have. If you have a six string, I don't see why a jazz pickup (mine is a Fralin, made for my guitar specifically) wouldn't work well.
I also think you can tame a pickup with EQ and the kind of amp you use. I know that most steel players love the Peavey's with the 15" speaker, but to my ears, they get that "in your face" sound that I, as a jazz guitarist, don't care for.
When I get my my new instrument, and I get a little better, I'll surely post some stuff, and we'll how it sounds.
Let me know how your experiments go - I'm very curious! _________________ Christopher Woitach

Christopher,
Here is a clip of my sound playing Solo
Steel...the tuning is Leavitt.
http://picosong.com/kXi
I am happy with that sound but I
like your tone and others I have heard
who play like you...most not as well I
might add.
Can you offer me a "half verse" of
a progression together with Tab/MP3
for standard guitar. I would transcribe to
my tuning on lap steel and explore
capturing the "timbre". Warm and easy.
Hope this is of interest.
If you wish take it to email and
we can talk about it further.
Many thanks.

Sounds nice, Roy! That's a lovely tone, in my opinion.
It might take a while to get you the file you requested, but I'm happy to do it.

That course is definitely on my "must buy" list along with the John Stowell one.
Currently working on the Mimi Fox one, which is pretty good too. Can't really go wrong with anything from True Fire in my experience. |
