Anyone have any comparisons between the two? I am probably interested in the maple bodied variation of one or the other. |

They're both excellent instruments, the two I'd recommend in the lower end price range. I own a Wechter Scheerhorn 6510F and am very happy with it. I've played many Gold Tone Beards and they are just as good.
Rob Anderlik has audio samples for comparison purposes on his excellent web site. _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

I have owned the mahogany laminate versions of both and prefer the sound of the Wechter over the Beard slightly.
My Wechter seems a to have a little more modern sound and a little better bass response. I did like the workmanship in the Beard better though.
The difference is marginal however and you really should try both if you can. I think you would be happy with either one. |

I have a W/S 'Rob Ickes' and a Goldtone PBS. They are both excellent but they sound totally different. The PBS is louder and the RI is sweeter. |

I would think the W/S Ickes model is a fairly different animal, being spruce and rosewood. |

I agree with Brad - both brands are excellent guitars in their price range.
I don't find one to be more "modern" sounding than the other. The Gold Tone's are soundwell guitar, whereas the W/S have an open body design. In very general terms I find that the W/S guitars have a slight edge in playability/responsiveness, whereas the Gold Tone's, especially the solid mahogany model has a little more low end response. Again, both are excellent choices in the $1000 and under category.

All of the W/S guitars are laminate guitars so I don't know if the spruce/rosewood aspect of the Rob Ickes model makes a huge difference. With that said, I have found the Rob Ickes model to be the best sounding of the W/S guitars.
The solid mahogany Gold Tone model is definitely worth the extra $$$. It sounds/plays better than the laminate version.
All of the above is my opinion, of course!
Hope this helps! |

Bear in mind that though this guitar is indeed spruce and rosewood, it is laminate, a different breed of cat from the solid wood guitars. Doesn't make them better or worse, just different. _________________ Mark |

I've played 'em all and like the Ickes model the best of the three being discussed here. But, as you all know, there are so many variables with resos. There was a nice Ickes model at the Buffalo Brothers store recently. I don't know if it's still there. I liked the sound of it. Of course, YMMV (as they say) _________________ To write with a broken pencil is pointless. |

I picked up a Mahogany Gold Tone/Beard a month ago to do use for live shows because I'm getting to where I don't like to take my 31 Dobro out any more. I couldn't stop playing it in the store and had to go back an get it.
I just did a recording session with it using a Neumann tube mic (not sure of the model). The artist and engineer were blown away, and people who have heard it are calling me complimenting me on the tone. In fact, the engineer went right out and bought one. Can't believe you can get that nice of an instrument for that price. _________________ Webb Kline--Yes, it's my real name and no, I don't own a Webb amp or a Kline guitar.
