Topic: String sets with reinforced 0.11? |

I've been using Carter strings, specifically the 'Smart String Set" that they put together with Ernie Ball strings and I really like the special reinforced 3rd strings, a 0.011R with a short wrap around just the twisted ball winding. The sets even come with an extra spare 0.011R string.
Do any other other string set brands also have this reinforced 0.011R? |

There seems to be a noticable improvement in the toughness of all brands of .011's I have used, Ernie Balls, D'Addarios, whatever. I don't break nearly as many as I used to, and I'm playing just as much. Could be that the wire all comes from the same place?
(Not the same as saying all strings are made by one manufacturer.)

I like S.I.T. strings as well. I was endorsed by them years ago, and still use their strings today on PSG, bass and guitar. I dont think they're reinforced, but they do Stay In Tune like their moniker.
One thing about those .011's: high A is a lot of tension!
I learned the hard way, breaking one after another, that extra winding at the post is essential on some guitars (my Mullen in particular), no matter what brand of strings. The hole in the post can become the cutting edge, so to speak, but as long as the wind is past the hole, all is good.

I recently tried some Jagwires after being happy with Cobra Coil's for a long time (the CC's have always lasted forever for me and have a nice warmer tone IMHO). The jagwires I ordered also have the "short twist" .115 ST string. I'll admit, I'm diggin' it.

Thanks everybody for the tips. I'll try Frenchy's Steel Mill Strings. Also got a good lead for getting extra individual strings. Here' some pics of what I was talking about: there's actually an extra winding around the ball twist and this extra winding stops before the useful part of the string. You can see that depending on the exact bridge roller size or ball capture style (pin or slot...or in the case of a different bridge design, like the Fender "knuckle"), this string might not work for all guitars...but on my Carter, it's great.

I have found on an M.S.A that the 0.11 almost last as long as the other strings because the others loose tone before the 3rd is ready to break.
Other guitars snap after 6 nights. I generally change every set after 8 nights/32 hours, but i change the 3rd, to be on the safe side every 4th-5th night, i get a bit paranoid when i'm milking them.
S.i.t/D'addario/ernie ball/ all good stuff.

| These longer windings may be just what the doctor ordered for the Excel steels that have that pesky 3rd string problem due to high tension with the 25 1/2 inch scale ....Thanks for sharing ...Jim |

FWIW: I used to order from juststrings.com, but last time I got a dozen sets of SIT E9's from them, they were all tarnished, the plain strings had some sort of junk on them, and they sounded terrible and very dull.
Wrote them back, for exchange or refund. No answer.
Called, said they'd check, no return call.
No reflection on SIT ! - I normally like their strings. I suspect it was a storage issue, or a spill of some kind? I just order direct from Jagwire now. And support my local mom+pop music stores for all other string purchases.
Your experience may be better with juststrings.com - I've just decided overall to do more business locally to support our local music economy - except for those things that are only avail. via internet vendors.

I have ordered lots of SIT strings (for E9, U12, D10, Dobro, Acoustic 6, 12 and Electric 6) from JustStrings.com in the past with no issues. They are definitely the lowest price I've found online, and occasionally send free flatpicks with the order too. Sorry to hear the customer service wasn't good. I've never had to call or email them.
