anyone use Ernie Ball strings for steel. I am asking because yesterday I got fed up with the 4 string whining using a Jagwire 4th string e9th. so I put on a ernie ball and low and behold no more whining. I was wondering if the 3rd string 11 thou break more often then the Jagwire... |

I have been using Ernie Ball strings for years.
I usually buy them by gauge since I have so many different instruments and tunings.
PS: Try a 12 on the 3rd string, it just sounds better. |

Been using Ernie Ball strings on electric guitar since the middle sixties and on pedal steel since the middle seventies. They're always available, at a good price, and hold up as well as anything on the market.........JH in Va. _________________ Don't matter who's in Austin (or anywhere else) Ralph Mooney is still the king!!! |

I like Jagwires for my steels because they're reliable and Danny's customer service is so good. I use Ernie Balls for all my electric guitars and would happily use them for steel, too, if Jagwire weren't there.
I like D'Addarios for my acoustics but will probably wind up with egg on my face when someone tells me that EB and D'Ads are one and the same!
I was in my car once with a young lady and on the back seat was one of those EB square boxes that contain a dozen sets of strings. She glanced at it quizzically and asked:
"What's an 'Ernie Ball'?" (accent on the first syllable.)
Maybe you had to be there but I thought it was pretty funny... _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles, Martins, and a Gibson Super 400!

I've been using Ernie Ball strings, when I can get them, since the mid 70's. Since Ernie was a steeler, they have extra windings around the nut, which, imho, keeps them intact under the stress and strain of pedal activity. I like the sound from them, too. - Jack |

i like ernie balls as much as any string. they used to be available individually from any music store. then i could just find d'addarios which i don't care for as much. now guitar center has eb's available as cheap singles. that's a good thing.
keep in mind occassionally there will be a bad brittle batch, but... |

I've used EB's since the mid 70s on guitar ,and now use them on everything ....bass,mando,steel and b***o too ....hardly ever a problem.
I tend to break more while installing (bad hands) than I ever have had break while playing. _________________ EQUIPMENT:

very interesting replies, I glad I rediscovered them.
I'm not too keen on the sound of the newer stainless steel strings , to me they don't have a mellow sound.
thanks for your replies on the subject... |

I too use Ernie Ball strings exclusively. They seldom break and sound very nice. I did put on a DiAddario .11 guage on my third a couple times in an emergency but they did break every time I try to get my third string up to pitch so I avoid them like the plague. Just my experience, though. You may have to search and try a few before you settle in on what works best for you, as always. Best Regards and Good luck.

On my first carter ( 93 ) I used only jagwire strings
and had no proplem with them.on my ( 07 ) carter it didn't like the jagwire's, I quess it would be that I
have more pull's on it. so with the Ernie Ball strings it works great. never broke one yet in 4 years. and play every weekend. |
