I am certain many of you know how to do this and if someone would share it with me, I would be appreciative.

Its a walk up from a 1 to a 4 chord lick similar to lets say in D, 5th fret, pedals down. Then you move up three frets while releasing pedals, up two more, then pedal down again. Simple lick. The one I am looking for is similar except upon making the first move, you can hear some strings raising while others are lowering. Is that something that is possible on a standard E9th tuning? I'm sure it is, but I can't find it.

Thanks,

Joe

Yes joe use the F lever to create the counterpoint 3 frets up on the 8th string, release it as you move into the A pedal (dom7)..Ill be happy to tab it when I get home...I know just what youre talking about!

5,6 8 AB up 3 frets 5,6,8 F lever, 5,6,8 A pedal
up 1 fret 5,6,8 ABF (Aug) up 1 fret A+B (4chord)
We need a tab insert in the menu huh?

Mickey,
If you wouldn't mind tabbing that sucker, that would be great cause I can't figure it from your explanation. But I did find a neat move from pedals down, go two frets up, and engage F lever only. Not sure what that makes or where you'd use it, but its a cool move for something.

Thanks,

Joe

Hi Joe, Mickey's lick is great! Try this one too: 10th fret, strings 4 & 8. 10th fret, string 4 lowered & string 7. 9th fret string 4 lowered and string 6 raised (b pedal). 10th fret, strings 5 & 6 with a & b pedal.

Joe, I hope you and Mickey don't mind if I tab out Mickey's lick and the one I posted. The first line is Mickey's lick and the second line is mine. Remember that licks that you use to go from the 1 to 4 chord can also be 5 to 1 moves (these licks can be key of D going from D to G or key of G going from D to G)

AB pedals on 5 gives you D {1 Chord} move up one fret to 6th.....release B pedal keep A down and Engage F ..KL...E...to F...gives you G.{4th chord)
move up 2 frets to 8 with A and F engaged gives you A..(5 chord}...play aroung with this

Hi, Joe ...
Of course, this isn't the lick you're describing, but thought I'd add this one into mix since we're talking counterpoint licks moving from the I to the IV ... if you haven't used this combination yet, here's a couple of simple licks that I sometimes like to use involving a passage from a I to a IV with strings raising and lowering at the same time ...

When you strike strings 5 & 8, simply press your "B" pedal while engaging your E-Eb knee lever to give you the raise and lower simultaneously, then strings 5 & 9 open, then resolve into your I chord ... in this example, with strings 5,6 & 8 using "A+B" pedals or strings 5,8,10 using "A+B" pedals. These can also pull double duty as a resolve from a V to a I.

Thats really close Jim, but it isn't quite the lick I'm looking for, or maybe I just don't know how to execute it correctly.

Chuck, those are cool too, but not quite what I was looking for.

But thanks everyone for your contributions. I really appreciate your tabbing this stuff out for me.

Joe

Joe, do you have a recorded example of the lick you're talking about, say maybe from an album or other recorded song? If so, I'd be happy to tab it for you if you can send me a recorded example of the lick you have in mind. Smile

No I don't Jim. Its probably a Paul Franklin lick since I've heard it used in newer stuff, but right now I can't even think of the song.

If I hear it again, I will be sure to let you know.

Thanks much, Jim.

Jim,
The lick you gave me is really close, but rather than going to a 7th right away, I think I am searching for a minor first, then maybe the dominant seventh.

That help?

Joe

I like Jims lick alot. i use the second one.

counterpoint is such a great sound. Theres some good stuff with 2 lowered a whole step and 5 string A pedaled also, but its not the lick Joe was after I dont think.

Theres also that low string stuff that emmons does alot on 5 and 8? is it in the intro to blue jade or sunday in dixie? as usual i dont really know what I'm talking about...I just hear these sounds in my mellon.

Thanks guys for posting the licks...This is what the "steel guitar forum" is all about...Most of these licks I'm familar with except the one Chuck tabbed out using strings 8 6 and 5.(one to a four). I must be phrasing it wrong, because I can't seem to get the right effect...I think BE came up with that one using 2 lowered a whole step with string 5 on the A pedal..That can be used as either a 1 to 4 or 1 to 5/7th, or a 5 to 1. It just depends on where you start and how you apply it..We used to call that the Emmons cross...This is great stuff..We need some more..Carson

Joe, here’s my take on the answer to your initial post.

5th Fret A+B Pedals down
Slide to the 8th Fret, releasing A+B and engaging E lower lever
Slide to the 10th Fret (hold the E lower)
Release E Lower Lever and Engage A+B Pedals for the finish

So the walk up chords are D – Em – F#m - G

Mike,
Thanks,

That is the lick I use now which is fine, but I am looking for a lick that when you move off the D there is a string going down and at least one going up. Its almost like the lower needs to drop an entire step. Like you are playing two instruments at once where the bass part would go from a D to a C while the rest of the chord moves up.

I wish I could give you guys an example.

Joe

If you have tuneable splits and can lower 6 a whole tone, try 5 and 6 @ fret 5 pedals down....move up to fret 6 leave pedals down and hit the knee that lowers 6. In effect, 5 moves up 1/2 and 6 moves down 1/2. I usually grab 456 @ 5 next with all still engaged for a D7, then raise 4 for a D7+5 and go to G @ 6 with A and F.

Is it this one: 5th fret, AB pedals, strings 865 then 7th fret same strings, F lever and B pedal. Then 8th fret F lever, release F lever, engage A lever, up to 10th fret then mash pedals AB. Don D

Thanks guys,

I haven't had a chance to try these newest suggestions, but I will.

Joe, I don't have tunable splits - maybe that is why I can't find the lick I'm looking for?

Stuart and Don, I will give those a try.

Thanks everyone,

Joe
