| Just acquired and am rebuilding a single eight string Gibson Console (someone destroyed and cut off one neck - I don't know the history). It has an eight string Triplex tuner on it (also somewhat destroyed - the lever was cut off??#$#!!~) I have rebuilt the cut off shaft and will build the lever arm. The cam section and brass string holders are 100% - so the question is - "what tunings can I get from it? It is not marked like the "stringtones" as to the tunings. The cam activates the the 6 low strings with 3 cam steps, the 2nd highest string on one cam step and non on the highest string. I have read the three mentions of a triplex from our history here. Thanks in advance! |

| Hi Raymond , I bought my "multi-harp triplex" from a guy in Texas a couple years ago. They were made in Chicago by H. Hise Mfg. Co. probably in the late 40s to early 50s . Mine was ser. # 2511 so they made quite a few!! I put mine on a Rick. DW-16 D-8 and it worked out real fine !! Gives me three tunings on the one neck, A6th , E9th & C# min.(E6th) plus on the other neck I use a C6th W/ no changes . I cut mine up and reground the cam to fit my tunings but I believe they were originally set to an "A" tuning then the changer moved to E and C# min.(E 6th). You could try setting up your steel to an "A" major chord then see what the cam changes the tunings to !!You can fine-tune with the knurled knobs on top. Too bad someone cut off the lever !!! Hi Eddy - I have added the missing shaft and turned a nice aluminum handle. I also marked the other end with the three positions of the cams. Your info will help a lot. I will try it as you say. See what reads on my strobo-scope.

| Hi Ray !!! When I saw your pics your 8 string "triplex" is a LOT more advanced than mine was !!! I had only six strings and only 3 or 4 string tuning knobs !!! I have no idea what you can do on yours !!! Looks much more advanced and probably more tuning adj. variations !!! I think you have something very good there and I have no idea what the original tunings may have been !!! Sorry I can't really help you !!! Maybe someone else has seen this one with the 8 strings and tuners for each string !!!! Looks like you can set up several tunings using all 8 strings !!!! WOW !!! Good luck with that one !!! I have a few of these . I have yet to install one but will soon, on my next non pedal lap. I also have a lot of extra parts that came from Paul Bigsby's "stash", such as fingers ... I'll have to check if there are extra handles in there.
From what I have been told you could take a A6 tuning, and bring it to a Noel Boggs E13 or a E 9 with a change and with another change get a B11 tuning.... or at least the base of one.
With the change from A6 to E9 you should be able to achieve a Isaacs type pedal effect.

| The more I am being told the better it gets. Even something this different is part of our steel history and I feel I want to hear it working. This guitar and changer where total basket cases but with TLC are coming back to life. I have read nothing but glowing praise for your work and I respect your input. Many thanks!! |
