I was just given an old Hawaiian guitar to get into shape and I have a few questions about it. It is marked "Federated Teachers" and looks to me like a Chicago maker from the the 30's (That is a guess). It has a round neck with a metal nut riser and a tall pin bridge (it had to be re glued to the top). I think the top is birch. Any other information on this brand?
The strangest thing is the uneven string spacing at the bridge, the 3rd and 4th strings are much closer together then the other evenly spaced strings. So there are 2 sets of 3 strings with even spacing and a pair very close together in the middle. Was this on purpose, and if so, what was the reason?
It has enclosed Kluson Deluxe tuners 3 on a strip. The 6th string tuner wants to de-tune if strung up above a low bass G or open D tuning (with Martin standard resonator strings). Can I repair the tuner so it will have a little more friction? The tuners seem great otherwise. |

I have several of these acoustics, one with the exact same bridge style, and the build quaility varies widely. I'd say plug and ream new holes. |

That looks quite good for it's age. |

Does anyone know more about the name of this guitar? It seems a rather peculiar name. I'm wondering if it was made for some music school? The name is suggestive of the AFT, but I don't know why they would have had a special Steel guitar made. |
